Have you tried everything from natural to pharmaceutical just to get a good night's rest? Join me, Martha Lewis, certified sleep expert and functional health coach as I unpack what's really keeping you up at night and how to change it. This is the Sleep Detective podcast and I'm going to show you how to sleep well so you can enjoy your life.
Hello. Hello everyone. Happy Wednesday. It is almost Halloween, which is really exciting for me. I have an 8-year-old, so Halloween is super fun. I'm doing the live later today at my son's school. We are building a greenhouse and so all the supplies for the greenhouse were delivered today. And so I met early this morning to help unload the truck and unpack everything. So that's why I am meeting later. I'm really excited about the greenhouse. I used to work on an organic farm. I volunteered there for six years and then actually was employee managing the volunteers for four years, and I would help with the farmer's market.
So I'm super passionate about good food and especially promoting that in the schools because even where I live in Jackson, Wyoming, I mean in Teton County where I live is one of the wealthiest communities in the whole country. And yet our school lunches, I mean they're from a national program, so they're not good. They're not nutritious, they have horrible ingredients. So whatever we can do to get fresh food into the schools I think is great. All right. Today I want to talk about why you are only sleeping five to six hours a night. And what this means, if you're sleeping less than seven hours a night, that's not good. That's not even normal because our bodies are meant to sleep between seven and nine hours a night. So I'm going to talk about this on Friday. What happens when you are sleeping less than seven hours a night, but research shows that you want to be getting at least seven hours to be healthy long-term pretty much.
And of course it's going to help in the short term too with your mood and focus and concentration and all of that. So not sleeping affects us in the short term and the long term, as I'm sure. So if you're only sleeping five, six or less than seven hours a night, it means that your body has been out of balance for years. So even if your sleep issues are more recent, a lot of my clients have been struggling for many years, but some people have only been struggling for a few months or maybe a year at the, but what was happening is that your body's slowly getting out of balance over time and then it got out of balance enough to where it's affected your sleep. It's causing symptoms of some kind. And for some of us, we are more predisposed to not being able to sleep.
So that's how imbalances show up for us. Now, sometimes you might know what triggered your insomnia. It could be something happened and you know exactly when that was and what triggered it, but I see that even as your body was still getting out of balance and that was just like the straw that broke the camel's back. So your body's been out of balance for a while. It's manifested in sleep issues. And so if you're getting fewer than seven hours of sleep a night, again, it's because your body isn't totally healthy. There are these imbalances. So to be able to sleep at least seven hours a night, all we need to do is find and fix those imbalances. Now, the most common things I see in people who are sleeping five to seven hours a night are high cortisol at night. And I use the Dutch test to see what's going on with your cortisol pattern.
And then we also want to find out, okay, why is cortisol high at night? And that can be from blood sugar issues, from liver detox issues, from a pathogen in the gut from toxins like heavy metals or mold. And then there are other imbalances that can also lead to not getting enough sleep. So sex hormone imbalances like low progesterone, estrogen, high testosterone in men and women. So this isn't just true for women can lead to poor sleep neurotransmitter deficiencies. Almost all of my clients don't have enough GABA and serotonin, and that's affecting their sleep mineral imbalances as well. So when calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium out imbalance, then that can directly lead to sleep issues. So that's why a lot of times magnesium isn't enough by itself to help. There are other minerals going on, and so you probably don't have every single one of these imbalances, but all of my clients have different combinations of a mix of these imbalances.
And even though this may seem like a lot to fix, everything is connected. So addressing a pathogen in the gut, for example, is also actually going to help balance sex hormones and it's going to reduce your liver's burden of toxins. So that's going to help with liver detox. It's going to help with mineral balance because when a pathogen has damaged the gut, then your body can't absorb the nutrients as opposed to from food as well. And so it's easy to become deficient nutrients like minerals. So everything's connected. And I just want you to know too, that even though your body has been out of whack for years, we can restore balance in just a few months. So luckily, the time to get better when you're doing it all at one time is a lot shorter than how long it's taking you to get out of balance.
And that's because we're addressing everything at the same time, especially in my Insomnia Insight program. So I was on the coaching call yesterday in the group, I was talking about these imbalances and I see it as a scale. So it's not like you have to be totally imperfect balance to be able to sleep. I mean, it's amazing sometimes when my clients are sleeping so much better and they continue in the program and do the retest, there's still things to address, but they're still able to sleep so much better. So I just see it as a scale. We just have to tip the scale enough, get your body enough back in balance so that you can sleep normally and not have any other symptoms. Then you don't have fatigue and brain fog and skin issues and lots of other symptoms. So I use functional lab tests plus assessments to give me all the data I need to see why your body can't sleep peacefully at least seven hours a night.
Now let me know if you have any questions at all in the comments, and I will check those there for sure. I see quite a few people watching on Instagram, which is wonderful. And in the meantime, I'm going to tell you about the Insomnia Insight Program. So I use your test results, health history habits, symptoms to pinpoint the most important factors that are affecting your sleep and help you fix them and get back in balance. Tip those scales just enough as simply as possible. And then you can stop trying to self-diagnose on Dr. Google, which I know I was doing when I had sleep issues, right? And tomorrow is the last day to sign up and get the October bonus. So it is a Sleep Better Jumpstart plan that is customized for you. So what this means that as soon as you sign up and fill out the intake forms, I'll review your symptoms, health history, habits, diets and more, and tell you three things to focus on right away to improve your sleep so you can get started even before your test results come in.
So it does take about 30 days from the time you sign up for you to do the test and the lab to process them and me to get the results, but we can get started right away. So I might suggest, for example, eating more protein to balance blood sugar. That can make a huge difference to changing what you do before bed to calming your nervous system. I look at mindset too. So I might recommend working on your thoughts about sleep or supporting your liver. And so making these simple changes can help you get at least an hour more of sleep a night immediately. Now with the Jumpstart plan, I also screen for mold toxicity, brain inflammation if your genes might be acting up and need support so you can start addressing those more pressing and often overlooked issues right away. And stop wondering why you have all these crazy symptoms, especially not being able to sleep.
This is the first time you'll have personalized insight on everything related to your sleep and health in one place. It's from a body and mind perspective, so you don't have to spend months waiting to go to multiple specialists, practitioners, therapists, and trying to follow multiple protocols. So you don't need to see an endocrinologist and a gastroenterologist and all the different things. We're going to be looking at gut health. I'm going to be looking at hormones. I'm going to be looking at how many different systems in your body are working all at the same time and helping you get everything back in balance all at the same time. And that's the fastest way to improve your sleep because when you just do one thing at a time, if you're just going to someone who specializes in hormones, then you might sleep better. But I work with so many women, especially who are taking HRT and it hasn't helped their sleep, and that's because if there's something going on with their gut or their liver or their neurotransmitters, just addressing hormones isn't going to be enough.
So my goal is to look at everything and in the Insomnia Insight Program, I will find and fix the root causes of your sleep issues so you can sleep at least seven hours a night without drugs. Now, the Insomnia Insight Program is a six month group program. So like I said, if you sign up by midnight tomorrow, you also get the jumpstart plan. It also includes analysis of four functional lab tests and assessments to find the root cause of your insomnia. It includes a customized holistic protocol. So this looking at diet, lifestyle and supplements so you know exactly what to do to get better that your body needs. You also get six months of support with weekly live coaching calls and daily group chat messaging so you get all of your questions answered and help implementing your plan so you have all the support you need to be successful.
And then there are also training modules in the program that you can access as soon as you sign up. So there are about health, diet, blood sugar, mindset, and of course sleep so that you can start improving right away. And then you can come to the coaching calls or ask questions about those things in the chat. So the investment is $2,500 or five monthly payments of $500. You can definitely sign up for the payment plan. You don't have to pay any more to do that. And then plus the cost of the lab test, which are just under a thousand dollars. So you get practitioner price of the lab test. I'm not making money on the lab test as well. And if you've already done any of the labs that I do, then if they're in the last six months and you can share those results with me, then we don't need to order them again.
You don't need to pay for them again if you have something recent. So I work with a lot of clients who have gone to other practitioners and who have done one or two of these tests, but not all of them. And so that's why they haven't gotten better because something has been missing from the other tests and from looking at this from a body and mind perspective. So I will put the link for more information, but I just want you to know that you are meant to get at least seven hours of sleep. It's what our bodies have meant to do. I always say we as humans have evolved for tens of thousands of years without getting rid of the need to spend a third of our lives asleep, right? Like you're sleeping. If you need eight hours sleep a night. That's a third of the day.
So that's how important sleep is. We haven't been able to evolve past that, so that means that we need sleep. It's what we're meant to do. And if you aren't able to get that, we just need to find what's getting in the way of that and fix it, and then you can sleep well. All right, everyone, thanks so much for being here and listening tomorrow. I am coming dressed up in costumes since it's Halloween and talking about how I overcame insomnia and the path that I took, and I want it to inspire you to show you how, and it took me a couple of years to figure it out. So I want to show you that we can make that process a lot faster by using what I've learned and by getting right to the root cause. So I will see you tomorrow.
