Episode Transcript:

Have you tried everything from natural to pharmaceutical just to get a good night's rest? Join me, Martha Lewis, certified sleep expert and functional health coach as I unpack what's really keeping you up at night and how to change it. This is the Sleep Detective podcast and I'm going to show you how to sleep well so you can enjoy your life.

Hello everyone. Happy Friday. I am just going to, I need to wait for Instagram to hit the Go Live button after two weeks of doing this and finally getting the hang of it and not messing up, going on Instagram too. So yes, happy Friday. I hope everyone had a great Halloween. We had a very wet and snowy Halloween, so it was awesome. Had a little neighborhood celebration with some other families and then we go to this neighborhood in downtown Wilson, Wyoming that just does an amazing job.

They're haunted houses and yeah, some places have alcoholic drinks for the adults and food, and so it's just super fun. I love Halloween. Then I was also freezing by the end of the night and ready to come home and curl up on the couch and get warm. So anyway, I hope that your Halloween was great as well. All right, today I want to talk about what happens when you sleep less than seven hours a night on a regular basis. And I want to talk about this because not sleeping is affecting your health and longevity. So if you're like myself and most of my clients, you care about your long-term health and about living a long healthy life into old age and that sleeping isn't good for you and that it can shorten your lifespan and quality of life and you not only want to live a long life, but also have a great quality of life.

Even in old age, I want to be like the 70-year-old. I see hiking in the Tetons every summer. I'm always amazed by these people. They're fit and they're vibrant and they're loving life and they are still out there enjoying the mountains and nature in a very active way. So I love seeing that. And so I also want to be sharp and active even in my eighties and nineties, and we know that this is possible. A lot of times we're told that, oh, not sleeping and oh, all these symptoms and oh, taking dozens of prescription medicines. It's just part of getting older. But we know that's not true because there are people who don't have to do that. So it's not inevitable if you start taking care of your health. So the way to be healthy in old age is to focus on your health Now you can't until then and then hope to be healthy.

We've got to do it now. And so that means not only eating well and exercising, but also getting enough sleep. Now, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine recommends that every adult gets at least seven hours of sleep a night, and that's because there's an increased risk of many chronic diseases from heart disease to diabetes to dementia to certain types of cancer for people who regularly sleep less than seven hours like sleep. So much happens when we sleep. We don't even know everything that happens yet, but we know that it is so important. Now, I'm not trying to scare you, right? I know how frustrating it is to hear these things and want to sleep but not be able to. So this isn't to make you more anxious. I don't want you to be anxious about not sleeping, not getting enough sleep and how it's affecting your health.

I just want to motivate you to do something and to let you know that there is something you can do. So you might not have realized that you have any options besides going to a psychiatrist, getting prescribed a sleeping pill or just living with it. But there is another option, and I'm telling you this, I want you to know that your body wants to sleep between seven and nine hours a night. It's what it's meant to do. So even if you think your sleep isn't that bad and you make it through the day with a couple cups of coffee and you can deal with crashing in the mid-afternoon and being exhausted at night, I just want you to know that not sleeping well is a symptom of a much bigger health problem. Now, again, I don't want you to be anxious about your health. I talked to a new client yesterday who's so worried about how it's affecting our health, and there's such a fine line between being anxious about it and just taking action to do what you can to get better.

And I'm not saying that you have cancer or some rare sleep disorder, right? I'm just talking about imbalances in the body. But not sleeping well is a sign that your body's out of balance and every day you're dealing with poor sleep. The health issues affecting your sleep are getting worse and worse, so they're not going to get better over time if you don't do anything. So the parasite, if you have one, is damaging your gut more. Your hormone imbalance is going to affect how well you're able to handle stress as the years go by. So by the time you have sleep issues, your body isn't going to magically get back in balance on its own. Like I just said, if you don't do anything and so your sleep is only going to continue to get worse if you don't take action months and years from now, the underlying health issues affecting your sleep will lead to more symptoms.

It could be skin issues, brain fog, memory loss, fatigue, all these things that are going to impact your everyday life more and more. And the longer you wait to address what's causing your sleep problems, the longer it's going to take for you to get better. So if you're getting fewer than seven hours to sleep a night, it's because there are imbalances in your body that are keeping you from being able to sleep normally. So this is why sleep hygiene and meditation and cognitive behavioral therapy and melatonin haven't really helped, right? They aren't enough to be able to sleep at least seven hours a night. All you need to do is find and fix the imbalances that are keeping you awake. So I hope that that makes sense. Definitely know. Let me know if you have questions as we go here.

So today I want to introduce my one-on-one private program. So I've been talking about my group program, the Insomnia Insight Program that is still available, but I also have a private coaching program that many of my clients prefer, and it is called the Complete Sleep Solution. So this will find and fix the underlying health issues in your body so that you can consistently sleep seven to nine hours uninterrupted in six months or less. So it's not just a sleep problem though, it's a sleep program. It's also a health restoring program. I will help you restore your health to fix your sleep in the program. You'll also know what your body needs to stay in balance so you can maintain your health as you get older.

Sleep is just one part of overall health, and by finding the imbalances in your body that are affecting your sleep, we're also going to find the imbalances in your body that aren't healthy, that are affecting your health and are going to continue to affect your health if you don't do anything about it. So you will know how to be as healthy as possible for the rest of your life. And you don't have to take dozens of supplements to try to biohack your health like Dave Asprey when the lab tests will show what your body really needs to be healthy. So to be healthy, we just need to target the imbalances in your body that are affecting your sleep and your health, and that's what I can help you with in the Complete Sleep Solution Program. So this program includes, I'm just looking for comments here, don't see anything yet, but let me know if you have questions.

The program includes a jumpstart plan within a week of signing up. So you'll actually meet with your coach within a week of signing up for the program, and she will tell you one to three simple but impactful things to do that will have a big impact on your sleep right away. So you'll get started. Even though it takes about a month to get the test results, you'll get started working on things right away. And many of our clients start sleeping better in the first month of working together. It includes analysis of four functional lab tests and assessments to look for everything that could be affecting your sleep so that nothing is missed. So if you've been to other practitioners, functional medicine doctors, et cetera, at least half of my clients have also been to countless practitioners. And it doesn't mean that they can't get better because they haven't gotten better yet.

It just means something has been missed. And so my goal is looking for all the things that affect sleep and health. Now, you also get a customized holistic diet, lifestyle and supplement protocol, so then you know exactly what to do to get better. So you aren't wondering, is this going to work or what does my body need? We're going to see from the test. You also get six months of support with 12 private coaching calls and daily private chat messaging to answer all of your questions and help you implement your plan. So again, you don't have to wait two months for your next appointment to get a simple question answered. I talked to, again, my new client yesterday who she was so frustrated because again, she got a protocol from someone and then she just had a quick question and she couldn't get it answered.

And so how frustrating is that, right? She just need a little bit of clarification. So the support is what makes the program so successful. And then we'll also help with sleep anxiety with the mental part of not sleeping as well. I don't want your mind to sabotage your sleep either, so it's not all in your head, but for if you've struggled with sleep for any amount of time, it gets in your head, right? And it's easy to worry about sleep to kind of obsess about sleep all day and all night and to dread bedtime and all of that. And so even though that alone won't solve the problem if they're also imbalances in your body, we still need to work on that. So it's very much a body and a mind program. Now, there are also valuable weekly training modules. Now, these are quick and to the point.

They're about 10 minutes long each because I know that we're busy and tired, but my goal here is to give you resources to improve your sleep and health even faster. And so then we'll talk about how each training applies to you in your sessions. Now, this program also includes analysis of other tests. Now, this is optional, but if you have recent blood work, we'll analyze that. A lot of times people's blood work says it's normal, but when we analyze it looking at optimal ranges or functional ranges as we call them, then we can see that things are actually out of balance. And what that means is that when you get your blood test results back, and the ranges on there that say it's normal, they are based on an average of people taking the test. So there's average and about 25% on either side, that's normal.

Optimal ranges or functional ranges are the ranges that people are in when they are healthy without any symptoms. So those tend to be a lot narrower than what the lab says is normal. And it's also important to know that lab reference ranges can vary from state to state. So there's this joke among practitioners that the way to get over a thyroid problem is to take a test in another state, and that state might say, oh, everything's normal. So looking at them from optimal ranges can give us some more clues. If we suspect mold toxicity, you have the option of taking tests to confirm that. We will analyze thyroid tests as well. A lot of our clients have thyroid issues, and again, the labs will say everything's fine, but our ranges will show that they're not. And so even though the thyroid isn't necessarily affecting sleep, the same imbalances in the body that are causing thyroid issues are also causing sleep issues.

So we are indirectly addressing thyroid issues, but knowing that we can still support your thyroid at the same time as we're working on everything else. Now, you will also get a customized plan to wean off sleep meds if you're taking them and if you want to, it's most of my client's goal to get off sleep meds or at least lower the dose. But my approach to getting off sleep meds is to let's start fixing the imbalances in the body first and then after a couple months of doing that, then start weaning off the sleep meds when you're going to be in a place where you're going to be more able to sleep well on your own. And we do it very gradually, and you'll want to get your doctor's approval of course, but I haven't had anyone's doctor not approve my plan. It's even more gradual than what they would recommend because what I want to prevent is any kind of rebound insomnia.

There's also a very psychological component to taking sleep meds. And so doing it very gradually makes it so much easier and more successful. Now, at the end of the program, you have the option to renew and retest. Many of my clients choose to do this. They want to keep working on their health even though they're sleeping so much better. There were imbalances that they want to make sure are resolved, and if not to keep working on them because like I've said earlier this week, it's not like you have to be imperfect health to be able to sleep well. I see it as a scale, right? And right now the scale is tipping enough. There are enough imbalances that your sleep is affected. So as we start working on those imbalances, the scale starts to balance out and then you'll be able to sleep normally. So it's not like things have to be completely perfect, but a lot of my clients care about their health.

They want to keep working on that. And so that's definitely an option. If not, then we give you an exit plan at the end of the six months so you can continue to stay healthy and continue to sleep well. Now the investment for the complete sleep solution, one-on-one program is $4,000. You also have the option of paying four monthly payments of a thousand, plus the cost of the lab test, which are just under a thousand, but you pay those separately to the lab. So if you've already done any of the tests that I do in the past six months, and you can share those results with us and you don't need to redo them again.

Now, to get started on this, you want to schedule a free consultation with me. So we'll talk about what's going on with your sleep and health, what you've tried so far. I'll explain why those things haven't worked, and I want to know what your goal is and make sure you're a good fit for the program. And if you are, then I'll explain the program how it works. That way you feel a hundred percent confident and ready to get started. You can also find more on my website, the sleep detective.com, and all of my programs are explained there. Awesome, everyone. I hope you enjoy your Friday and have a great weekend. And I'm here if you want help, and I will talk to you soon.
