Episode Transcript:

Have you tried everything from natural to pharmaceutical just to get a good night's rest? Join me, Martha Lewis, certified sleep expert and functional health coach as I unpack what's really keeping you up at night and how to change it. This is the Sleep Detective podcast and I'm going to show you how to sleep well so you can enjoy your life.

Hello. Hello everyone. Happy Friday. I don't know if you're as excited as I am for the weekend maybe because I am leaving for San Diego tomorrow morning for a week for a trip with my family. And I've been working really hard and I've been excited about it because I've really been thinking about all of you a lot and remembering when I had such trouble sleeping and how frustrating it was and miserable it was, and it seemed like there was no answer. And so in these lives I've been doing every day, I've just been wanting to share with you what I think you need to know and what I can help you with and what I can tell you so that you know that can fix your sleep issues.

You can sleep well, you can fall asleep, easily, sleep all night long, wake up feeling great with energy. That is how we're supposed to be. And when our bodies are in balance, that is what happens. So if you take anything from these lives that I've been doing or from this one today, just please know that your body is meant to sleep well. It wants to sleep. And if it can't, it just means there's something in the way of that. And just because you've tried so many things, if you're like me and many of my clients, you've tried melatonin and magnesium and CBD and herbs and sleeping pills and Tylenol PM and Unisom and sleep trackers and a new mattress and essential oils and a cooling pad and right, there's so many different things to try following sleep hygiene, doing cognitive behavioral therapy. I mean, the list is endless.

And so I know it seems you've tried everything, but I guarantee you haven't because if you had, you would be sleeping because it's inevitable that you can sleep well. So if you've tried all the things, there are several reasons why these things haven't improved your sleep. And so that's what I want to talk about today. So reason number one is that there's actually more than one thing causing your sleep problems. So the first reason why nothing has helped is probably because you're trying one thing at a time or addressing one part of the body at a time. If you're even doing that when there's actually more than one thing causing your insomnia. So maybe you've tried magnesium and it didn't help you sleep, you might actually still be deficient in magnesium and need it, but you also have other things going on such as an unhealthy gut or liver detox issues or hormone imbalance.

And so all of those things, including magnesium deficiency, could be contributing to your poor sleep. So that's why magnesium itself isn't going to help or you might not be deficient in magnesium at all. But I see this, and I've been saying this a lot lately, but as everyone has their own unique puzzle and pieces in the puzzle of what's causing their sleep issues, and there's always more than one thing because by the time your body's gotten out of balance enough to have symptoms such as not being able to sleep normally, it means that multiple systems in your body have gotten out of balance because once one thing gets out of balance, it affects other systems in the body because everything in the body is connected. And so this is why going to a gastroenterologist or an endocrinologist or these specialties in the medical system, they haven't necessarily been able to help.

This is why even if you've gone to other practitioners that they haven't been able to help, they just haven't, something's been missed. And so we need to find all the reasons, all the imbalances in your body that are affecting your sleep and address them all at the same time for you to get better. So for me, I mean I had a parasite which had damaged my gut over time and led to food sensitivities and leaky gut. My hormones were out of balance probably from having a baby at age 39. My minerals were out of balance partly because my gut was damaged and also stress deplete certain minerals faster than others. I had heavy metals and copper toxicity. So when I did the testing, all of those things were contributing to my sleep issues. And I know it can seem overwhelming, but I also was so happy to find answers instead of just getting blood work done and everything's normal.

And it's like, so what is wrong with me? Then there's no answer if everything's fine. But if you aren't sleeping, there's no way that everything is fine in your body. And I don't mean there's something major going on like cancer or anything like that. It just means that there are some underlying health issues that have affected your body over time and are now affecting your sleep. So reason number two is you just haven't gotten to the root cause of why you can't sleep. So the supplements, the pills, the gadgets are really band-aids that are just trying to get rid of the symptom or maybe they're giving you a little more sleep but not really solving the problem. And so we really have to deal with what's causing your insomnia in the first place. And so especially if you're on a roller coaster with some good nights and then bad nights and it's impossible, you can't figure out what's working and what isn't working, it's because you haven't addressed the root cause yet. So when we address the root cause and give your body what it needs, then it gets back in balance and then you're able to consistently sleep well all the time. I use functional lab tests to show what's going on in your body that's keeping you awake at night so you know what to fix. We're finding and fixing the root cause instead of just masking the symptoms.

Now, reason number three is you might be guessing, what I mean is you're trying this pill and that gadget and trying to see if it will work. I talked to someone who became a client yesterday who she's like, it feels like throwing spaghetti at the wall. She has two drawers full of supplements and she doesn't really know what's doing what and what her body actually needs. And so that's what I love about the testing. It is testing instead of guessing. The test will show what your body needs. And so even if you're taking dozens of supplements, we ask about that in the intake forms and we'll be able to tell you, okay, continue taking this. Why don't you pause on these things for a while? Or they aren't necessary or they're actually doing more harm than good because your body already has too much of whatever it is.

It could be calcium or magnesium or whatever it is. So I truly believe in testing instead of guessing even something like a probiotic. When I worked in the supplement industry, I used to think that, oh, everyone should take a probiotic. Well, most people, yes, are deficient in the good bacteria and that's important to supplement with while also looking at overall gut health. But I've seen people who have way too much bacteria, good and bad. And so taking a probiotic is actually causing more inflammation and adding more fuel to that fire. And so not everyone should take a probiotic. We're all different. Not every woman over 40 needs calcium. Sometimes I see people with way too much calcium and their bodies aren't absorbing it, and so it's building up in the soft tissue like the hair and the arteries, and that's not good. So testing is so important so that you are taking what your body needs and not taking things that your body actually doesn't need.

And the problem is that when you're trying all these different things and they keep not working, you just get more discouraged and more frustrated. And so then it's easy to start believing that nothing's going to work. So you stop trying or you try one little thing at a time hoping it will work and then you stay stuck. So the way to get out of this is to do all the lab testing to find all the pieces of your puzzle, and that's going to be the fastest and way more effective way than just guessing or even just addressing one thing at a time.

Now, reason number four, why nothing has worked so far is that you're either looking at your body or your mind and not both at the same time. So both your body and your mind are playing a role in your sleep problems. And some people will tell me it's not mental for them. There's always some component of worrying about sleep tossing and turning in the middle of the night, being frustrated, things like that. So I work with a lot of people who have done cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia or CBTI, and that's great, but that's not going to be enough if you also have a parasite for example, that's keeping you awake. And then we can also address a parasite. But if you're super busy and stressed all the time or you're worried and obsessing about sleep all the time, then just dealing with the parasite isn't going to be enough.

So we really need to work on both. And for me, when I first started trying to figure out my sleep, I became an adult sleep consultant that looked more at the mental part and habits and behaviors and things like that and sleep hygiene. And that actually did help me get more sleep. So I realized that I was talking about sleep all the time, complaining about how tired I was all the time, researching about all the time getting so frustrated. And so it had totally gotten into my head. And so we need to address that and address the imbalances in your body that are also affecting your sleep. And so some of the most common things I see in the body and mind are going to be pathogens in the gut, food sensitivities, liver detox issues, mineral imbalance and hormone imbalance and neurotransmitter deficiencies. But I also see things like chronic stress, negative thoughts about sleep, even being unhappy in your job relationship life is this low key stress that is affecting your body and breaking down your body over time.

So if you have trouble sleeping, it's definitely a sign that your body isn't healthy and there are things going on in both your body and your mind that are keeping you awake at night. So if nothing has worked so far, it doesn't mean that you can't get better. It just means we need to look at everything that's causing your sleep issues more than one thing. We need to get to the root cause of why you can't sleep. We need to test instead of guess. So we know exactly what your body needs to get back in balance, and we need to look at both your body and your mind at the same time, and that is going to actually solve the problem and help you consistently be able to sleep seven to nine hours a night without medication and long-term, right? So I'm not just talking about a quick fix of I'm going to recommend this supplement that's going to help you sleep through the night.

If that existed, I would totally recommend it to everyone who, whoever invented that supplement or pill would be a bazillionaire and people wouldn't have sleep issues anymore. But there's not one magic pill that's going to work for everyone or even use people, right? Because there's more than one thing that's causing your sleep issues. So let me know if you have any questions about your sleep or about how I help people get to the root of their sleep issues and finally be able to consistently sleep well. I'm going to put the link to my program that helps with this. So the Complete Sleep Solution Program is a six month one-on-one program where we use four functional lab tests, which I explained in detail yesterday on the live. So you can go back and look that up if you didn't see that I explained each test and what it's looking for.

And so we analyze the four lab tests so that we have data, also do some as assessments, looking for other possible causes of sleep issues like blood sugar imbalances, mold toxicity, brain inflammation, and more. So really getting the big picture and getting all the pieces of the puzzle. And you also get, then once we have all of your test results back, you get a personalized protocol. So this is made for you. Again, everyone's pieces of the puzzle are different. So all of our clients' protocols are different. Again, if I could just even give everyone 10 supplements that would work for everyone, I would totally do that. But unfortunately, everyone's imbalances or underlying health issues are different. So we recommend different things to depending on that. And it's also very holistic protocol in that yes, we do recommend supplements for the short term based on what the tests show that your body needs, but we're also looking at your diet, your habits, your lifestyle, everything very holistically, even your mindset about sleep, stress in general in your life so that we aren't missing anything.

And so that we're addressing everything that is affecting your health and your sleep. And this really is a health restoring program. So I'm specializing in sleep, and that is another reason why maybe everything you've tried so far hasn't worked. If you've been to other practitioners, if they aren't specializing in sleep, they're probably not looking at neurotransmitters, for example. And a lot of people aren't doing the hair tissue mineral analysis that is looking at minerals and heavy metals, so, so there are just some pieces of the puzzle that are missing, and I'm looking at everything, the big picture of your entire life so that nothing is missed. And then you get 12 sessions with a coach. So right now, my coach, my co-coach in the program who works with most of our clients is Claudine. She's amazing. She's been with me for at least six months now.

She's helped over 40 clients improve their sleep. She has the same certification I do in the lab testing, and she's been trained in my method. I still oversee your case, so you actually have two sets of eyes on your case instead of just one. So we collaborate together and talk about your case to make sure that you are sleeping well by in six months or less. Many of our clients start sleeping better very quickly just from what we recommend in the beginning. As soon as you sign up, we give you a jumpstart plan with the top three things to work on while we're still waiting for the test results. And a lot of our clients start sleeping better right away from that. And then when the test results come back, then we dive in so that you can consistently sleep well long-term by correcting those imbalances in your body.

So you have 12 sessions over six months. So you meet twice a month with your coach to talk about our recommendations. We go over your lab tests in detail, in language that you can understand, and then we check in as in the rest of the sessions as you implement your plan. So if something's tricky to implement, we help you with that. We answer all of your questions. And then we can also have time to work on the mental part of not sleeping, if that is an issue for you and about stressing your life in general. So the support is what makes a program so successful, and it's why 95% of our clients are sleeping better in six months or less no matter what is going on in their lives, whether they have young children with special needs or aging parents who they're taking care of. No matter what's going on, they're still able to sleep better long-term to really fix their sleep. And that's because we can't just fix your sleep in a vacuum with no stressors because that's not how real life is, right?

Things are always going to be coming up. So the program really designed to help you sleep better no matter what's going on in your life, even though the holidays are coming up. We guide you through how to manage those holidays and still stay healthy without depriving yourself of everything that you love. So the support is so is an essential part of you getting better and being successful in the program. And then you also get chat messaging Monday through Friday as well. So if questions come up between sessions, you can totally get those answered, and so you don't have to wait and pay for another appointment to get those answered. Also, also, there's a whole program of trainings in the program that you get released a new training every week. These are quick to the point, they're five to 10 minutes long. I know we're busy and tired, but I want to give you as many resources as I can.

So you start sleeping better as quickly as possible. And then you talk about how those trainings apply to you in the sessions with your coach. So the time commitment is very minimal. There's more time commitment at the beginning. It takes up to 30 minutes to fill out the intake forms, and then you do the test in your homes, send the samples back to the lab, and there are a few more modules when you first sign up just to get you going on things. I give you helpful information for the lab test. There's a module on how to be successful in the program. There is modules to get started on seeing if blood sugar is an issue for you to help you calm your nervous system. So in the beginning, I'm giving you the most important, most impactful information right away. And so you might spend a little more time at the beginning of the program to get going, but then once your test results come back and you're on your protocol, it's really just time for the sessions, time to pop into the chat if questions come up.

And then these really quick training modules that are of course optional, but I highly recommend 'em in this program. If you have other tests such as thyroid test, recent blood work, if mold toxicity is an issue for you, we might recommend some mold tests. So we will also analyze those tests, so that's included in the program as well. And if you're on sleeping pills, we will give you a customized wean down plan with your doctor's approval at the right point in the program that we recommend weaning off sleeping pills. So my approach is always to let's start correcting the imbalances in your body and then start weaning off the sleeping pills when you're at a place where your body's more imbalanced and is going to be able to sleep well naturally. And we do it so gradually that it helps not have the psychological part of getting off the sleeping pills and so that you don't get rebound insomnia and your body doesn't go through withdrawals and have side effects.

So that is also included. And then at the end of the six months, you have the option to renew and retake the test and do the program again, or we'll give you an exit plan so you have a plan moving forward so that you can continue to sleep well and work on your health. So the program cost is $4,000 or four monthly payments of a thousand dollars. So you can definitely do a payment plan and plus the cost of the lab tests, which are just under a thousand dollars. So you get to pay the practitioner wholesale price for those tests. So I'm not making any money on those tests. That way they are as inexpensive as possible. And if you've done any of the tests before in the past six months or so and you can share those results with us, then you don't need to take them again.

So sometimes our clients have done one or two of the test, and so then we'll just order the other two tests for you. So that is how that works. But in the Complete Sleep Solution Program, we will help you consistently sleep seven to nine hours a night uninterrupted naturally without drugs. So you can find out more at the link that I shared. You are welcome to message me anytime or email me support@thesleepdetective.com. And my team and I are happy to answer any questions that you have, but I just want you to know you are meant to sleep well. So there are imbalances in your body that are affecting your sleep. Your mind might be affecting your sleep as well. And all we have to do is find what's going on and fix those things. And then you can sleep normally, even if you haven't slept well since childhood or college like many of my clients.

So don't give up. Just I hope you can see why everything you've tried so far hasn't worked. It's not your fault. You're probably on the right track. And everything that you've tried so far is just giving you more data as to what does and doesn't work. So it wasn't for nothing, but we can finally get to the bottom of this once and for all. All right, everyone have a great weekend. I am on vacation next week in San Diego with my family, so I will not see you then, but I will see you. And then the next week is Thanksgiving week, so I will see you in December, which sounds crazy, but of course, I do have spots open for consultations on the week of Thanksgiving, so the Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday before Thanksgiving. The spots are filling up fast, but I am definitely available then.

And so yeah, the first step to get started in the program is to book a consultation with me. So I want us to meet each other. I want to find out what's going on with your sleep and your health, make sure you're a good fit for the program. We'll talk about everything that you've tried so far, I can explain why that hasn't worked, and then what is actually going to work and how the Complete Sleep solution will help you finally get to the root causes of your sleep issue so that you can sleep well. So I hope to talk to you soon. Thanks for listening, everyone.
