If you’re following longevity protocols — supplements, fasting, peptides, biohacks — and your sleep isn’t getting better or has actually gotten worse, this one is for you.

In this episode, I’m going to show you:

  • the hidden reason longevity protocols backfire on sleep
  • how to recognize when your body is asking for something different
  • what has to come first before any optimization actually works.

Episode Transcript

[00:00:00] if you're following longevity protocols -supplements, fasting, peptides, biohacks and your sleep isn't getting better or has actually gotten worse, this episode is for you. I know it's frustrating that you're doing more for your health than ever, and yet your body just won't shut down at night.

What most people don't realize is that longevity assumes something very specific about your body. And when that assumption isn't true, the very things meant to extend your health can start actually working against you. That's why so many people feel wired, restless, or stuck in light sleep while doing all the right things.

I work with people who are deeply committed to their health, and I see this exact -pattern over and over, not because they're doing too little. But just because they're doing things in the wrong order.

In this episode, I'm going to show you the hidden reason longevity protocols backfire on sleep, how to recognize when your body is asking for something [00:01:00] different, and what has to come first before any optimization is actually going to work.

First, I want to tell you about a client of mine who cares deeply about his health and longevity. He's a business owner and architect, so he's very analytical. He tracks everything. He works out constantly cardio and weights, and if anything, he has a history of exercising too much.

He intermittent fast. He cold plunges. He tried peptides. He wears a whoop and checks his HRV and recovery every morning, and he does blood work every quarter.

So from the outside, he looks like this picture of health, but he hasn't been sleeping. He's wired at night. His sleep is light and broken, and he's even been taking Lunesta every single night just to get rest, even though he hates being dependent on it, and he doesn't wanna be on it long term.

And what's interesting is that everything he's doing is technically healthy, right? He's doing what longevity [00:02:00] culture tells us to do, but his body is telling a very different story. And so that's when I knew something was off. Because when someone is doing all the right things for their health, but they still need medication just to sleep, the problem usually isn't that they need more optimization.

It's that something deeper is out of balance.

So when we actually looked at what was happening inside his body, it became really clear why all those longevity protocols weren't helping, and in some cases were actually making things worse.

So his labs showed that his body was under constant stress. There was inflammation in the gut and impaired digestion.

He had plenty of toxins like mycotoxins, heavy metals and environmental chemicals. His neurotransmitters were outta balance in a way that made it hard for his nervous system to shut down at night. And his cortisol was elevated at night instead of dropping. So no wonder he couldn't sleep. And he also had some signs of [00:03:00] estrogen dominance and high oxidative stress.

So to sum it up, his body was out of balance in many different ways, and that's why he couldn't sleep normally. And this is what is really. I realize counterintuitive that when your body is dealing with that level of imbalance, layering on longevity and optimization protocols like training more ,fasting, cold exposure, peptides, that doesn't actually create resilience and balance, it adds to the stress load.

So even though he was trying to be healthy, his body was getting pushed farther out of balance, the more of those things he did. So this is why sleep has to come first. It has to come before optimization because until the body's I balance enough, it's going to resist optimization no matter how good the protocol is.

So once we stopped trying to optimize and focus on [00:04:00] restoring balance, that's when things started to change.

I will be right back to the show in a second, but have you been trying all the things to sleep better, and yet you're still lying awake at night and tired every day? If you're ready to fall asleep easily, stay asleep all night and wake up feeling rested so you can live a long and healthy life, that's exactly what I help people do in the Complete Sleep Solution Program. To get started, you can apply at the link in the description.

Now back to my client story. I want to contrast this with what usually happens when people don't stop and reassess and they try to keep going. So most people in this situation don't pull back. They double down, right? So if sleep is getting worse and they try adding another supplement, they tighten their fasting window, they increase training maybe to try and exhaust themselves at night, or they assume they just need more discipline.

This makes sense because they're hearing all these things in the longevity and the health space, and so they want to [00:05:00] do these things. They also know that they need to be sleeping for longevity. So they wanna figure this out and they're trying to do the right thing. But what I see over and over is that the more people do stressful things, the body doesn't respond by getting stronger. It responds by getting more out of balance, and so then sleep gets worse, recovery drops, people end up becoming more dependent on sleep medication, not less, even though they're doing all these healthy things.

Client is an architect. I explained it to 'em like this. So longevity protocols are like high-end finishes in a building. They're not bad. They're just not where we start. If the foundation is cracked and the wiring isn't working and the plumbing isn't working, it doesn't matter how nice those finishes are. You can install them but even though the building looks good, it's not gonna function properly or last long. So [00:06:00] similarly, sleep is part of the foundation and digestion, detoxification, hormone balance, those are all the structural systems that have to be working correctly first. When those things aren't stable, adding more upgrades doesn't create a better building.

It just puts more stress on a structure that's already struggling. Once a foundation is solid, though, optimization actually works. Until then, it's just decoration.

So back to my client, about two and a half months into the program, his sleep was already more consistent. He isn't as wired at night. He's waking less.

His recovery, including his HRV, has improved. He just told me yesterday that he had the best month he's ever had for recovery. And so this is our first signals that his body is finally able to repair instead of just compensate and get him through. And instead of rushing to get off Lunesta, even though I know he wants to do that, we're [00:07:00] giving his body more time to stabilize first.

Because when sleep improves, then and the body gets more back in balance, then tapering becomes much smoother and far more sustainable. My approach is let's wean off any sleep aids once a body is back in balance and it's gonna be able to sleep well on its own.

And what surprised him most was what him sleeping better actually revealed during the day. So he started noticing how much pressure he's under at work, constant interruptions, long stretches without recovering, very little downtime. He's an introvert and he's working in this highly stimulating environment with lots of colleagues. So now we're making changes there, like protecting focus work time, and working from home part of the week.

So this is a part I want you to take with you from this episode. Longevity isn't about doing more. It's about creating [00:08:00] enough balance that your body can recover. If you're not sleeping, your system is already overloaded and stressed. And adding longevity protocols is not going to fix it.

It's actually making things worse and delaying progress.

So if you're serious about long-term health, stop asking what to optimize Next. Ask what needs to be brought back into balance first. Then you can optimize. Because sleep isn't something you earn after longevity. Sleep is what makes longevity possible. It's one of the main foundations.
