[00:00:00] What if you could go from weeks of complete desperation and zero sleep to consistently getting over eight hours of deep restorative sleep and it only took two months? Today, you'll meet my client Paul, who was at his absolute breaking point when he found me through a desperate Apple Podcast search.
He'll share the surprising discoveries we made through functional lab testing that were secretly sabotaging his sleep. Plus the exact moment everything clicked and he started consistently sleeping nine hours straight every night. This is the Sleep Detective podcast where you will learn why you can't sleep and how to fix it.
I'm Martha Lewis. As a functional health and life coach for the past six years, I've helped over 200 clients find and fix the root causes of their health issues so they can naturally sleep through the night again, just like Paul.
Hello everyone. Today I have my wonderful client, Paul [00:01:00] on to talk about his experience in the program and how he's been sleeping. Thanks so much for being here, Paul. Absolutely. Glad to be here, Martha. Yay. Awesome. Well, let's get started with how were you sleeping when you came to me and what was going on then?
Yeah, I came to you, I looked it up the other day in early. Well. mid-March because I was having a couple weeks of insomnia that started around the second week of March and. I remembered I was much more calm this time. I've had insomnia before in my life, but this time I have a little bit of perspective and I just realized I can't do this alone.
I'm gonna need some help and I need a coach. So I found you through the Apple Podcast, the sleep detective that you put on. I just typed in insomnia to the Apple Podcast. Query bar and found you as the top thing. And I listened to a podcast or two of yours, and I just really resonated with your story, the fact that you had suffered from insomnia as well when you had your son and [00:02:00] you went through functional testing and figured it out and this is what you dedicate your life to.
So that really resonated with me. And then I did a free consultative session with you to see if it was a good fit, and it was. And I signed up on the spot and then we did our first session the next day. So I just was convinced, and like I said, I knew. At this point in my life, I needed a coach to help me through this.
I didn't want to try to do it on my own, which I've done in the past to limited degree of success. And the outcome has been phenomenal over the, I think by, from March through mid-April, I still had trouble sleeping, but by Labor Day I went on vacation. I remember it very clearly, and I had a full night of sleep.
After going through a bunch of your detox and a few other regimens that you put me on. Yeah. Awesome. Yeah, and I thought it was interesting that you've been through this before in times of your life and I remember thinking, okay, let's get to the bottom of this once and for all so you don't have to deal with this again.
Totally. Because it's definitely a sign that things are outta balance and yeah. You [00:03:00] know that this is happening, so Awesome. So do you remember what your test results showed that were effectively, yeah, we came back, we did a bunch of tests. I don't remember each individual test, but cumulatively we found out, I think, from the Dutch test, that it had very high elevated cortisol.
We also found that I had mercury elevated as well. That could be from fillings in my teeth is what your thought was, because I don't eat a ton of tuna fish. And the last one was a overabundance of candida in my gut. And so you put me on a regimen of beam minerals for detoxification and a couple other cortisol manager drugs, et cetera, that you put me on to help out.
And it made a big difference in kind of clearing that up. Yeah. Awesome. Yeah, and I think, the Candida's a big one because it's most active at night and it's I definitely see a lot of people waking up in the middle of the night and not being able to sleep at all if that's happening yeah.
Yeah. And I started taking Kechi as well. That was one of [00:04:00] your recommendations was fermented foods? So I changed a little bit up of my diet, but I also took some of the supplements. For the Candida as well. A candid X, if I recall the name. And I think we got that under control. It's doing great now.
Yeah. Awesome. So what do you think made the biggest difference? I think two things I mentioned to you one that you were really good at the functional impact. I think that was super helpful. Getting all the testing, ruling out what may be the problem of waking me up at night. And then I also found another coach named Daniel King, who I worked with on the psychological and emotional, and I think the two of you combined together made such a great team on trying to figure out.
What was the root cause of my sleeping? I had gone through a lot of change. I moved from Chapel Hill, North Carolina to Dallas. I had a lot on my mind. I think clearing that up was really good. And then getting to the functional impact of what was causing my inability to sleep and in some cases, the inability to get back to sleep.
'cause once you did finally get me to sleep with the help of [00:05:00] transcriptions. The little tro were fantastic and I started using those and within the first day or two of using it, I was at least able to get to sleep. I still woke up in the middle of the night and would then read books and relax on the couch until I got tired again and try to go back to sleep.
But at least the transcriptions were a lifesaver to get me through. The first couple weeks of getting some sleep in a long time. Yeah. Awesome. Yeah, and I definitely like to help with the psychological, mental part too, but you already had that covered, which is totally great. And everyone's different as to how much support they need in that area.
So yeah, it's just, it's customized for each person and Absolutely. You didn't need that as much yeah, that was great. Do you remember how long it took you to see improvements? I know you mentioned briefly, but I think I'd have to map it exactly on the calendar, but I had about six weeks where I wasn't sleeping at all.
And then that was towards the end of March that I came to you. And by the Labor Day, which would be end of May, I had [00:06:00] my first solid nights of sleep when I went on vacation to the Texas Hill Country. So maybe two months. Yeah, all in. If I do the math on it, was about the duration that it took to start to see improvements and from that point forward, I was great.
I was able to get back to sleep if I woke up. I wasn't worried anymore about sleep during the day, and so let's call it two months would be probably a realistic assessment of how long it took to weed out the problems, go through the testing with you, and then start getting to the root cause of what was causing me not to sleep.
Yeah, I remember that, and I always loved your messages when you would text me, I slept nine hours and I know I totally would check in with you and let you know. It's probably from the middle of the night or the first thing in the morning when I woke up. But I know I chatted with you a lot, just letting you know I'm making progress.
I'm doing really good and yeah, and everything's working, which is perfect. I remember just when I was able to start sleeping at Memorial Day, that, I just, I felt so much energy. I was back to my old self again. I had lots of energy to go work out again. I started getting in a [00:07:00] regimen of going to the gym, during that period and getting some exercise, walking four days a week, and strength training three days a week.
And it just made me feel really good to be able to get some sleep and go do that again. Yeah, exactly. It's hard to be healthy like we wanna be and do fitness things and work out when we're not sleeping. And actually you probably shouldn't be doing that yes. Yeah. So it's great to be able to get back to, the healthy lifestyle that you wanna have.
And I think the thing that's interesting, what I really appreciated about you and Daniel as well, but both had histories of insomnia and solving their insomnia, is that. If you don't have insomnia, you don't understand how bad it is. But when you're in the middle of several nights to several weeks of no sleep, it's miserable and you feel very isolated and lonely.
And so it really helped having you as a coach to talk about it, to make sure we came up with a plan that you were gonna fix it, that we'll go through this together and that journey [00:08:00] with you is just incredible. So really appreciate your coaching and your help. Oh, I'm so glad. And the fact that you were sleeping great by two months is pretty exceptional.
Definitely. Not all my clients have that quick turnaround, but I think because, your sleep issues had been off and on, but it's not like they were on for decades. Yes. And so then it does take longer. To get the body back in balance. So I think in your case, because it was newer and it was probably, that recent stress that kind of triggered things, that you were able to get better so much faster.
Yeah, it happened faster than I expected. I was expecting months upon months to figure this out, but within two months is when I really got solid sleep and I think. It's interesting. I bought a Apple watch, not for the sleep function, but it does have sleep capabilities on it, and I'm getting north of eight and a half to nine hours of sleep now on average.
And that's been since Memorial Day, back in May. And so it's really reassuring to see [00:09:00] that data and it's pretty accurate. I notice if I wake up, it will show me on the wake up cycle and then go back down to sleep immediately. And so it's just really good to have that other validation of data.
Yeah. Supporting how good of sleep that I'm getting. Yeah. That's awesome. And it's just as important how you feel too. And it sounds like you're feeling a lot better as well. I feel like a champ. Today was my 56th birthday. Yay. Totally. Yay. And I was up by 6 0 5, got the dog out to go to the bathroom, hit the gym, and just got on with my morning and I'm ready by eight o'clock for work.
So it's been really good to keep that schedule and not worry. I used to stay in bed till. Seven 30 sometimes hoping I would get back to sleep and it never would work. And now I'm just on a really good pattern where I get to bed early around, probably around eight 30. I start shutting down. I go through a routine that I came up with that when I started getting sleep.
Benefits I have kept to this day. And so I do some prayer. You introduced me to tapping in addition to the prayer. That's really helpful. [00:10:00] And then I did some journaling that I continue to do occasionally now, but it's been really helpful to keep a diary to do the tapping, I think is so undervalued. I can't believe the impact of tapping.
I start yawning now when I do my tapping. I see. It puts me into sleep mode. It's great. Awesome. And those tapping could be anywhere from two minutes, little quick anxiety ones to sometimes 15 minute ones. And I'm no longer tapping just for sleep. There were a hole. Series of modules on the Tapping solution app that are around sleep.
But once I got over it, I now just picked just general topics to tap on and then go to sleep super quickly thereafter. Awesome. Amazing. I love it. Alright is there anything else you want to add? I would say that anyone who's listening to this podcast right now who's going through sleep issues and hasn't committed to getting it fixed with the help of a coach.
It's the best investment you can make. It certainly was not inexpensive, but it was well worth solving the problem, my sleep issues, and getting to the root [00:11:00] cause of it. I just cannot tell you how thankful I am to you for the role that you played in helping get to the root cause of it and taking all the functional tests to figure out where I had imbalances and minerals in my system, and it's just been a, just a godsend to change the way it is today.
I'm so glad to hear that. Thank you. And yeah, it's been a pleasure working with you and you did all the hard work and made all the changes and took the supplements, so well. I'm glad to do it. I'm still on that regimen today. It's really helpful. Yeah. Awesome. Thanks so much for being here, Paul. I really appreciate it.
If you're ready to get to the bottom of your sleep issues once and for all and get a step-by-step plan to fix them. Just like Paul, the first step is to book a free consultation with me so we can meet each other. I can find out what's going on with your sleep and health and explain how the program works.
You can schedule a consultation at the link in the show notes. [00:12:00] Thanks for listening, and I will talk to you soon.
