[00:00:00] This may sound crazy, but intelligence might actually be the thing sabotaging your sleep if you're a smart entrepreneur who's researched everything, tried every supplement, and still can't sleep through the night. This episode will change everything. I'm going to reveal why intelligent people often are the worst at solving their own sleep problems, and the one systematic approach that actually works when your brain won't shut off.

By the end, you'll know exactly why all that research hasn't worked and what to do instead. This is the Sleep Detective Podcast where you will learn why you can't sleep and how to fix it naturally. I'm Martha Lewis. I've been a functional health and life coach for the past six years, and I've helped over 200 clients find and fix the root causes of their health issues so they can consistently sleep seven to nine hours a night without drugs.

And I've worked with many super [00:01:00] smart, successful people. Just like you. So if you've been thinking, I've been researching sleep for years, I'm pretty smart and good at figuring things out, do I really need help? Or can I just handle this myself? This is exactly what I used to think too. So when I developed insomnia.

Over nine years ago at this point, I had a master's in holistic nutrition. I was working in the supplement industry, so I knew all about supplements, hormones, and how the body works, and I am the type of person who loves to research and solve problems. By myself, so when my sleep fell apart, I was confident that I could fix it myself, but I was wrong.

I struggled for two years and I threw everything I knew at this problem, right? I tried every supplement combination imaginable that I could think of. I researched circadian rhythm science for hours. [00:02:00] I experimented with different diets and meal timing. I tracked my sleep patterns practically obsessively, and I read every book and article and study I could find, and I was sure that with enough research and experimenting that I could figure it out.

But this is what I didn't know. My body was dealing with multiple hidden imbalances that no amount of smart guessing could actually uncover. So there was a parasite that I didn't even know existed. There were hormone imbalances that weren't showing up on blood work. There were toxins and heavy metals. I never would've suspected, and I had liver dysfunction affecting my detox pathways, even though again, I was already healthy and lived a very healthy lifestyle.

So it turned out that being smart had nothing to do with it. And that what I was missing was data. [00:03:00] So real comprehensive data about what was actually happening inside my body. And there was also a part that really surprised me, and that's that I had to also face the mental component of not sleeping. Despite all my nutritional knowledge and gut health knowledge, I had developed serious fear and worry about not sleeping. I would lie awake with my mind racing. There were nights I was crying because I was so desperate for sleep and so worried about what would happen the next day if I didn't fall asleep soon.

And so all the supplements and even fixing the hidden imbalances in my body. Weren't gonna fix that anxiety loop. So I had to also work on that. Let's talk about why intelligent entrepreneurs especially struggle more with sleep. So there are five reasons. Number one is overthinking. So you probably have this racing mind that won't shut off, [00:04:00] right?

You're constantly thinking about your business problem solving about your business, even during non-work time, I know that this was me too. You also are probably going down the research rabbit hole. So spending hours Googling instead of sleeping. Maybe there's a little bit control freak in there, like trying to force sleep.

And as you've probably discovered, that does not work. And if anything, the more we try to force it, the less it's going to happen. There's also this obsession with optimizing. So looking at all the variables, trying to perfect everything at the same time, and that can be too much and impossible to do.

And then there's that mentality of, I should be able to fix this. So there's a lot of resistance to asking for help, and this is something that. Definitely became apparent during my time with sleep issues and that I have worked [00:05:00] on since that. So this, actually, this problem has helped me be more willing to ask for help with all kinds of other things in my life, but I totally get not wanting to ask for help and wanting to figure it out.

And my client, Andrew, who I actually talked about in last week's episode, had the exact same experience. So he was a lawyer, so he's incredibly analytical, methodical, and before finding me, he researched everything and he tried to solve it systematically on his own. As he said, I questioned everything I thought, everything I tried, everything I ate, everything I drank, everything I did or didn't do.

I just thought maybe that's it. But it turned out there was more going on for him in his body that was affecting his sleep. And the diet, what he was doing was a small part of it, but there were many other pieces of his puzzle missing as to why he wasn't able to [00:06:00] sleep. So this is. There are also five critical mistakes that intelligent people make when it comes to solving sleep problems.

So first of all, there's a lot of guessing instead of testing. So what I mean is like trying different supplements, just like I was doing, right? Trying melatonin, trying magnesium. Maybe I need this, maybe I need that. In this day and age, there's also AI and chat GPT to try and figure out why you weren't sleeping and.

It's only through testing and finding out what's actually going on in your body that's going to tell us, give us the data that we need to know what to correct. There's also the problem with trying everything at one time, right? You see this supplement and this gadget and this thing and because you're desperate for sleep, I get it.

But there's, it's not systematic. It's just random throwing [00:07:00] spaghetti at the wall to see what sticks. Also, people tend to ignore the emotional component, and this is different for everyone. How much help you need with this, worry about sleep, anxiety about sleep, things like that might seem unscientific, but they're definitely still impacting your sleep.

But it's of course not enough to just address that without looking at the physical component as well. And then there's overthinking instead of actually doing or following advice. So we can tend to get in that analysis paralysis of, again, all this research and becoming overwhelmed and then not knowing what to do at all.

Plus there's so much conflicting information out there, so it's very confusing. So the key, again with the testing then is to find out what your body needs. Some people do need magnesium and some people do need melatonin, and those are one small piece of the whole puzzle, but we don't know that [00:08:00] unless we actually test and see what your body needs.

And then the fifth mistake too is jumping to that next theory. So sometimes it's a matter of not sticking to one approach long enough because it does take time to get the body back in balance. But if you're. Guessing and trying everything at once, or, feeling overwhelmed and not trying anything, then this is why you haven't gotten better.

And this is just like my struggle for two years of trying all the different supplements and tracking everything and doing so much research and not actually finding the answer. So let's talk about what actually is going to work. First of all, we need objective lab. Data. So this is where the comprehensive functional lab testing and the assessments I do are key, and they find things that blood work does not find.

A lot of my client's blood work and [00:09:00] my blood work was always ideal, right? And the doctor says, oh, you're in perfect health. It's but I can't sleep, so something isn't right. So instead of using blood work to try and diagnose a specific disease. These tests look at how different systems in the body are working so we can see what isn't working normally.

Because if you can't sleep normally, there's no way your body is functioning normally. And so I look at hormone balance, at liver function, at gut health, at neurotransmitters, at mine, balance at toxins such as heavy metals and mold, and environmental toxins. And more blood sugar. I'm definitely looking at habits and the mental part of not sleeping as well, but these labs and assessments give me all this objective data so I can see what your specific pieces of the puzzle are.

The [00:10:00] next thing you need is a systematic protocol, so we need to address these imbalances in the right order, though. You don't just wanna do a parasite cleanse, whether you've tested. Or not and know you have a parasite or not without also supporting liver detox and making sure your body is able to deal with the effects of trying to target a parasite.

It also, what's really needed is professional mindset support. So a lot of times we can't see. What we're thinking and how we're sabotaging ourselves, and so I help find those things and give evidence-based techniques for dealing with anxiety about sleep. It's also super important to have accountability, so this will help you follow through instead of just jumping to the next theory or getting discouraged because you're a week in and nothing has changed.

It's gonna take a little more time than that. But [00:11:00] I am confident that when we find the imbalances and start working on correcting those, that you will be able to sleep in a much shorter amount of time than your body's been outta balance, and then you've been struggling to sleep. It also helps to work with someone with experience, so having guidance from someone who specializes in sleep and who solve this puzzle for hundreds of people.

And then your intelligence actually becomes your superpower. So once you have the right roadmap, and it all makes sense to you, it's easy to follow, you know the right questions to ask. You know when if something doesn't seem right and to ask for help troubleshooting that. And so it's like you're already above baseline because of all the research and things you've done, and you have some idea of what does and doesn't work.

And so then it's easier to move forward with the data that we get from the lab testing. [00:12:00] So my client, Paul, who is a scientist, said, seeing test results that suggest if you do this, you might improve. That to me has been very constructive. So I work with a lot of scientists and analytical people because they love the data that we get from the testing.

If this is something that you want help with, you can book a free consultation with me to get started so that you can stop researching and start solving. Then you can consistently sleep seven or more hours and get your mental energy back so that you can be unstoppable in your business. Imagine your mind actually quieting at bedtime instead of racing through tomorrow's problems, and then you're able to wake up with that sharp mental clarity that built your business, and you'll have that every single day.

So the question isn't whether you're smart enough to figure this out. The question is how much longer do you want to keep guessing? [00:13:00] I wasted two years trying to be smart about my sleep problem, and you don't have to make that same mistake because sometimes the smartest thing you can do is to stop trying to do everything yourself.

Thanks so much for listening, and I will talk to you next week.
