Is your sleep up and down, and so it's easy to ignore it when you're sleeping okay, and then you get more determined when it deteriorates again, and maybe you've tried lots of little things to improve your sleep, but nothing has really worked. This is the Sleep Detective Podcast where you'll learn why you can't sleep and how to fix it naturally.
My name is Martha Lewis, and I'm a certified functional health coach. Through lab testing, I corrected the imbalances in my body that were causing me to wake up at 3 a. m. every night and have since helped over 200 clients find and fix the root causes of their sleep issues too. In this episode, you're going to find out the five signs that indicate that sleep is an issue for you and that it's time to get help.
Why things like magnesium, melatonin, meditation, a new mattress, and more haven't helped. What's going to happen if you wait to work on your sleep and how to get off the roller coaster of bad sleep, then okay sleep, then back to bad sleep again, so you can solve this problem once and for all and consistently sleep better.
So before I get into the five things, I want to tell you about my client, Sarah. So she is lovely. She's in her thirties. She's eating healthy. She's exercising. She's from the UK and Egypt, but she travels all over the world with her now fiance. And so she didn't think that sleep was a main issue for her because she.
Does sleep, but she would have trouble falling asleep, and then she's always tired the next day and especially exhausted after eating. And so even though it can take her half an hour to an hour to fall asleep, once she does, she sleeps through the night just fine. Now, she's also dealing with headaches and migraines, and her memory has been affected by not sleeping.
And again, she's tired. She doesn't have energy. day. So her goal is to feel fresh during the day to have energy to not have these headaches more than it is actually to fall asleep fast or fix her sleep. But she's realized that sleep, even though it wasn't her main concern, it's what's affecting everything else and the imbalances in her body that will fix her sleep and give her more energy and get rid of the headaches and improve her digestion are also going to help with her sleep.
And I will tell you exactly what she was dealing with in a few minutes. So if you're wondering if you really need help with sleep, here's how you know. If your sleep quality goes up and down, so if you're on that roller coaster, sometimes it's good, sometimes it's bad, then that's still a sign that your body's out of balance and you want to address what's going on there.
Now, of course, if your sleep is gradually or suddenly getting worse and not getting better at all, even if you're not on that roller coaster, if it's just gradually gone downhill over the months and years, then it's definitely time to get help. If you're don't wake up feeling refreshed and full of energy.
So whether you aren't sleeping enough or you are, let's say you're sleeping Eight hours a night, but you aren't waking up refreshed and that's a sure sign that you're not getting good quality sleep and imbalances in your body can also affect the quality of your sleep. And so that's why you're waking up tired and you don't have energy throughout the day.
Now if you've gone to your doctor and everything is normal, I always say quote unquote normal, if you don't feel normal, if you're having any kind of symptoms including sleep issues, but also digestive issues and fatigue and headaches and things like that, those are all signs that your body's out of balance. That there are underlying health issues that are causing all of these symptoms. So it's easy to band aid these things, right? If you have a headache, you take some Tylenol. If you have a migraine, you take stronger medicine. Maybe you get a prescription for these things. That's not getting to the root of why they're actually happening.
All of my clients, or most of them, have gone to their doctor. They've gotten blood work done. Everything is normal. So there's nothing to work on. The doctor says, okay, follow the sleep tips or go see a psychiatrist because it's all in your head, or here's a sleep medication. Let's try that. And again, none of those things are getting to the root because the root are imbalances in your body that are literally either affecting the quality of your sleep or they are fully keeping you awake at night.
And so that's why if you've tried supplements like melatonin and magnesium and CBD and maybe even THC, if you've tried different gadgets, if you've tried following what I call the sleep rules of no screens before bed and wearing blue light blocking glasses and, not drinking coffee after 2 p.m., all of those things, if you've got a new mattress or, Sheets or a pillow or whatever it is, those things can help improve the quality of sleep for someone who's already sleeping pretty well But they're not going to help you overcome health and sleep issues And so that is why those things haven't worked and especially if certain supplements haven't worked like melatonin or magnesium by the time You aren't sleeping well, or you're on the roller coaster, or you aren't waking up refreshed.
There's more going on than just magnesium deficiency or just lack of melatonin. So that's why those supplements by themselves aren't enough to fully fix this for you. Because if your gut isn't healthy and your hormones are out of balance and you don't have enough neurotransmitters, And your minerals are out of balance and your body isn't detoxing properly.
Melatonin and magnesium aren't going to fix that. And diet and exercise aren't enough to fix that either. Just like Sarah, who, she's exercising and she's eating healthy. And those things aren't enough once you have You know, deeper issues going on, more underlying health issues. And of course, you want to get help with this if you know that sleep is important for your health and longevity.
So if you are experiencing any of the things that I just talked about, it's time to get to the bottom of what's causing your poor sleep, because not sleeping well is a symptom of a bigger problem, and that's that there are these imbalances and your body isn't totally healthy. And so if you don't do anything about it now, it's only going to get worse over time and lead to other symptoms and health issues and then eventually lead to different diseases and diagnoses.
And I'm. Not saying this to scare you, but hopefully to motivate you. Like sleep is so important. We as humans have evolved for tens of thousands, if not millions of years. without getting rid of our need to sleep seven to nine hours a night. That's a third of our adult life is spent sleeping. That's how important it is.
And so if you can't, and if you're waking up feeling tired, if you're tired after eating, if you're dealing with things, Headaches and digestive issues and other things, it's a sign that your body isn't healthy and those health issues are going to keep getting worse over time if you don't do anything.
And it's going to take longer to get better, the longer you wait and the more out of balance your body gets, the longer it's going to take for you to get back in balance. So back to Sarah, the lab testing that I do in my program showed that while I assessed and saw that she likely has mold toxicity and then her lab test showed she has low neurotransmitters, her hormones are depleted, she has high cortisol at night, which is totally explaining, why she's having a hard time falling asleep and why she isn't waking up feeling rested because that cortisol, even though it's not waking her up fully, like it does some of us it is still affecting the quality of our sleep.
She had heavy metals. She's dealing with candida, which is a yeast that affects sleep and poor digestion and detox issues. And so she didn't address these things. Her health would only get worse. And again, she's only in her thirties and as we can see, diet and exercise aren't enough to fix a pathogen in the gut and low neurotransmitters and high cortisol at night and all of these things.
So pinpointing these issues, and now I'm giving her a plan to address all of these things. That's how she's not only going to sleep better, but she's also going to have energy, not have headaches. Her digestion is going to improve all the things that she's looking to do. So to summarize, how to know if it's time to get help with your sleep is if your sleep quality is going up and down and you're on that roller coaster, if your sleep is gradually or suddenly getting worse, if you aren't waking up feeling refreshed and have energy throughout the day, if you've gone to your doctor and and he didn't find anything wrong and everything's normal.
It doesn't mean that there aren't other issues going on. We can find them with functional lab testing. And if you tried all the things, the supplements, the gadgets, the sleep trackers, sleep hygiene, and more, but they haven't really helped, that's when it's time to dig deeper and get help with this. So finding and fixing the imbalances in your body is how you get off the roller coaster of bad sleep and then okay, sleep and then back to bad sleep again and how you can solve this problem once and for all.
So I love this quote by Dr. Matthew Walker, who's a prominent sleep researcher. He wrote, the shorter your sleep, the shorter your life. So it's shown that not getting enough sleep is going to shorten our lifespan. That's how important it is. So now you know if it's time for you to get help with this, and that is definitely something that I can help you with.
Now, if you enjoyed these episode, I ask you to please rate and review the show. So more people can find this podcast. And I'll see you next time. and get the sleep you need. All right, everyone, thanks for listening, and I will talk to you next week.
