You Can’t Sleep Because You’re Treating the Wrong Stress

By Martha Lewis1/14/2026
You Can’t Sleep Because You’re Treating the Wrong Stress

You probably think stress is keeping you awake at night.

And you're right—but not in the way you think.

When your sleep is off, you naturally blame work pressure, family obligations, or that endless mental to-do list. But here's what most people don't realize: you're only aware of one type of stress, even though your body is dealing with all three.

And until you address all three, no amount of meditation, magnesium, or melatonin is going to fix your sleep.

What Stress Actually Is

We usually think of stress as mental and emotional—the constant thinking, worrying, and feeling overwhelmed. But that's not the full picture.

Stress is anything your nervous system has to adapt to. And sleep breaks down when your total stress load exceeds what your body can handle.

The problem? Some of that stress is completely hidden from you. Your body is managing it 24/7, but you have no idea it's there.

Let me break down all three types.

Type 1: Mind Stress (The One You Know About)

This is the mental and emotional stress you're already familiar with:

- Constant thinking, processing, anticipating, worrying

- Feeling responsible for everything (especially common for parents juggling work and kids)

- Financial pressure

- Relationship troubles

- Constant input from work emails and social media

How It Affects Sleep

Mind stress keeps your sympathetic nervous system activated all day. When bedtime comes, it can't just flip a switch and turn off. This leads to:

- Racing thoughts at bedtime

- Difficulty falling asleep

- That "wired but tired" feeling

High achievers especially tend to think this level of stress is normal and unchangeable. And when you've tried meditation and breathwork without results, you assume you're just stuck with bad sleep.

But here's the thing: this is usually not the only stress affecting your sleep. It's just the only one you're aware of.

Take my client Alex. He's busy at work with a major deadline, has three young children (one waking up at night), and felt completely overwhelmed. He assumed THAT was why he couldn't sleep.

But as you'll see, there was a lot more going on under the surface.

Type 2: Body Stress (The Hidden Physical Load)

This is internal physical stress your body has to manage whether you feel emotionally stressed or not:

- Blood sugar rollercoaster (or not eating enough/eating too much)

- Under-exercising or over-training

- Gut inflammation and infections

- Liver detoxification issues

- Hormone imbalances

How It Affects Sleep

Body stress leads to:

- Light, restless sleep

- Waking up too early (especially that 3-4am wake-up where you can't fall back asleep)

- Difficulty staying asleep

If your body isn't physiologically calm, it can't stay asleep. This is what most people completely miss.

I had a parasite for probably 13 years. No digestive issues. No other symptoms. Just sleep problems that developed over a decade later.

And here's the kicker: sometimes your "healthy habits" are actually adding stress. Intermittent fasting, cold plunges, intense exercise—all potentially adding to an already stressed body.

This is why you can be exhausted at night but still unable to sleep.

Back to Alex: testing revealed he had high cortisol at night. The cause? Mycotoxins from mold in his body, trouble detoxing, and digestive issues. He couldn't tell any of this was happening—but it was absolutely affecting his sleep.

Type 3: Toxin Stress (The Invisible Burden)

This is external stuff your body has to detoxify, process, or adapt to:

- Alcohol (even small amounts)

- Medications

- Too many supplements

- Environmental chemicals in cleaning and personal care products

- Mold exposure

- Pollution

- Heavy metals

How It Affects Sleep

Toxin stress causes:

- Fragmented sleep

- Vivid dreams or frequent night waking

- Non-restorative sleep

Your nervous system literally can't rest while it's trying to deal with toxins—or when the toxic load exceeds what it can handle.

This gets overlooked because it's invisible. You can't feel heavy metals or environmental chemicals in your body.

That's why I run a Total Tox Burden test to see exactly what someone is dealing with. We all have some toxins, but I've seen clients with 10 and clients with 30. That's a massive difference in stress load.

Why Your Supplements Aren't Working

If you're struggling to sleep, you probably have all three types of stress. And you're probably only aware of the mind stress.

Or maybe you're retired with low mental stress, thinking "I shouldn't be stressed—why can't I sleep?" That's because you have hidden body and toxin stressors you don't know about.

This is why melatonin, magnesium, CBD, and cannabis don't help. They can't address the heavy metals, infections, gut issues, and mold hiding under the surface.

If you try to fix the wrong type of stress, you won't get better. Meditation won't help if you have parasites. Sleep hygiene won't work if you're full of mycotoxins.

You Don't Need to Eliminate Stress—You Need to Lower the Right Kind

You can't fully eliminate mental stress. That's not realistic when you have a career, a family, and responsibilities.

But you CAN identify and reduce the hidden body and toxin stress that's keeping you awake.

Inside my Complete Sleep Solution program, we look at mind, body, and toxin stress together using functional lab testing. No more guessing what to fix first.

This program is for people who have tried everything—sleep hygiene, CBT, meditation, random supplements—and still aren't sleeping. That means there are definitely hidden stressors you don't know about.

It's different for everyone. That's why we customize your protocol based on YOUR specific test results. We address all three types of stress so you actually get better.

Most clients achieve their sleep goals in six months or less.
