Why you’re PEEING at night

By Martha Lewis3/14/2024
Why you’re PEEING at night

If you’re waking up to pee several times a night, and having trouble falling back asleep, there are reasons why. And we can fix it so you can finally get a good night’s sleep!

In this blog post, we’ll talk about the 4 main reasons you’re waking up to pee at night. You’ll also learn different ways you can fix this frustrating issue.

Let’s dive in!

Reason 1: High cortisol causes people to wake up and pee at night

High cortisol at night shouldn’t be happening. Period.

In a healthy body, cortisol should be lowest first thing in the morning. It should spike to its highest level within two hours of waking up. Then it should gradually go down throughout the day so it’s low at bedtime and in the middle of the night.

But many of my clients are experiencing high cortisol in the middle of the night. You might be experiencing this too! Here’s why this is happening…

When there is high inflammation in the body, the body releases cortisol to protect you. This is because cortisol is an anti-inflammatory hormone.

If this is happening in the middle of the night, it can cause you to wake up completely or prevent you from getting the deep sleep your body needs to feel rested.

When your body is releasing cortisol to fight inflammation, your body isn’t releasing the hormones you need to suppress urination at night, which include the vasopressin hormone or antidiuretic hormone.

Vasopressin is normally released at night to keep you from peeing while you’re sleeping.

This is why it’s so important to reduce inflammation in your body. It will contribute towards keeping your cortisol levels low while you sleep at night, so your body can produce the hormones it needs to keep you from peeing!

How do you reduce inflammation in your body?

Balancing your blood sugar, adjusting your diet for food sensitivities, and removing gut pathogens will help.

I use the DUTCH test and the GI Map test to find out what’s happening inside my client’s bodies when it comes to cortisol, inflammation, blood sugar, food sensitivities, gut pathogens, liver function, and so much more! Then, I create a plan to get the body back in balance so you can feel better and get 7+ hours of interrupted sleep a night.

Reason 2: Mouth breathing causes people to wake up and pee at night

Humans are meant to breathe through their nose. When you breathe through your mouth, it causes a diuretic response in the body that causes you to have to pee.

If you are snoring or breathing with your mouth open at night, your body will have a diuretic response, you’ll wake up, and you’ll have to pee.

I recently interviewed Sachin Patel on my podcast and talked about mouth breathing, sinus congestion, and mouth taping in detail.

That podcast episode is called How to breathe for your best sleep and is a great resource for you if you are having this issue.

Reason 3: Mold toxicity causes people to wake up and pee at night

Did you know that about 25% of the population has a gene that makes it hard for them to get rid of mold from inside the body?

When your body can’t clear the toxins from mold properly, you can develop a chronic inflammatory response. This could mean high inflammation, high cortisol, liver congestion, damaging the gut, creating room in the body for the mold to grow, and all kinds of other havoc.

This is very damaging to the body and needs to be corrected for a good night’s sleep and so much more!

If you suspect you’re dealing with mold toxicity, I recommend you read a previous blog post I wrote called Mold toxicity could be causing your insomnia. That blog post is a great resource for you to get better.

Many people with mold toxicity also have high oxalates, which can also cause urination at night. There are also foods high in oxalates, including raw leafy greens, soy, and nuts so if you have a green smoothie every day or are vegetarian and eat a lot of soy and nuts, you may be eating too many oxalates.

Reason 4: Mineral imbalance causes people to wake up and pee at night

The primary minerals (calcium, magnesium, sodium, and potassium) should be in balance with each other.

When your primary minerals are not in balance it causes sleep issues, mood issues, and it directly affects how well your body is absorbing water - which affects your urination.

Interestingly, low potassium has been directly linked to having to pee at night.

I use the Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA) test to identify mineral imbalances in my client’s bodies and create a plan to get them back in balance.

Knowing your mineral balance and deficiencies is key to getting your whole body back in balance so you can sleep well. The HTMA test also shows how your adrenals, thyroid, blood sugar, and nervous system are functioning and it looks at heavy metals which can cause neurological and liver issues.

If you’re waking up to pee several times a night, there are reasons why!
