Why She Still Couldn't Sleep After 20 Years: The Overlooked Cause

By Martha Lewis9/24/2025
Why She Still Couldn't Sleep After 20 Years: The Overlooked Cause

If you've been struggling with chronic insomnia for years—trying sleep clinics, prescription medications, herbal remedies, and every sleep hygiene tip out there—you're not alone. And more importantly, there's likely a deeper reason you're not sleeping that nobody's looked at yet.

I recently sat down with Jane, who's been dealing with severe insomnia for almost 20 years. She's tried it all, and she's still only getting 4-5 hours of broken sleep each night. Her story reveals something important that most people miss when addressing sleep problems.

The Problem with Standard Sleep Advice

Jane did everything "right." She went to a sleep clinic. They hooked her up to all the monitors, diagnosed her with chronic insomnia, and gave her the standard recommendations:

- No stimulants before bed

- Sleep stories

- Sleep hygiene protocols

- Prescription sleep medications

Some things helped temporarily. The sleep stories worked for a while. The medications (like Zopiclone) became less effective over time. But nothing gave her lasting relief.

Here's the thing: if you're watching TV before bed and sleeping fine, that's not your problem. Millions of people do that. When you have chronic insomnia—especially after trying everything—there's something deeper going on in your body.

When Your Body Can't Handle Stress Anymore

Jane retired five years ago, partly because she couldn't function after going three nights with barely any sleep. She felt like a zombie at work.

But even in retirement, with no obvious stress in her life, her sleep didn't improve. In fact, her health got worse. She started getting sick every 2-3 months—colds, flu, viruses. Her immune system was clearly compromised.

This is what happens when your body's "stress bucket" overflows. You might not feel mentally stressed, but your body is dealing with:

- Environmental toxins

- Hormone imbalances

- Gut infections

- Mineral deficiencies

- Inflammation

When your body can't handle it anymore, something breaks down. For some people, it's their sleep. For others, it's their thyroid, their digestion, or their immune system.

The Hidden Culprit: Mold Toxicity

When I reviewed Jane's symptom assessment, one thing jumped out: she had 8 out of 13 symptom clusters for Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (CIRS)—most commonly caused by mold toxicity.

The surprising part? Jane had no idea she'd been exposed to mold.

This is incredibly common. Mold hides in places you can't see—underneath paint, in basements, in HVAC systems. It's not just black mold you can spot on walls. Even in dry climates, anywhere there's been water damage, mold can thrive if it's not addressed immediately.

Here's why mold toxicity matters for sleep:

- Mycotoxins (mold toxins) live in your gut and are nocturnal

- They're a common reason for waking up at 3 AM

- They affect every system in your body—especially hormones, gut health, and your ability to detox

- They can cause muscle tension, racing thoughts at night, and compromised immunity

Everything Is Connected

Jane also mentioned she'd dealt with:

- Graves disease (hyperthyroidism)

- High blood pressure (when it used to be low)

- A heart murmur that appeared with her thyroid issues

In conventional medicine, these would be treated as separate problems by different specialists. But in functional medicine, we know everything is connected.

Mold toxicity can trigger autoimmune conditions like Graves disease. It can disrupt hormones. It can affect your heart and blood pressure. It's not five different problems—it's one underlying issue affecting multiple systems.

What Actually Helps Chronic Insomnia

If you've tried everything and you're still not sleeping, here's what I recommend:

1. Investigate potential mold exposure in your home or workplace

2. Run functional lab tests*to see how your hormones, gut, detoxification pathways, and mineral levels have been affected

3. Address all the systems at once—not just one piece of the puzzle

4. Focus on the basics while you investigate deeper issues:

   - Drink more water (at least 8 glasses a day) to help your body detox

   - Eat 25+ grams of protein per meal to support hormone and neurotransmitter production

   - Support your body's natural detox pathways (pee, poop, sweat daily)

#The Bottom Line

You're not broken. You're not destined to be a "bad sleeper." Your body is meant to sleep well—we evolved that way for tens of thousands of years.

If you can't sleep despite doing everything right, it's because something is getting in the way. Usually, it's underlying health issues you don't even know are there—even if you live a healthy lifestyle.

The good news? Once you find what's actually causing your sleep problems (not just surface-level habits), you can fix it. Even after decades of insomnia.

Struggling with chronic insomnia that won't respond to standard treatments? It's time to look deeper. Functional lab testing can reveal the hidden health issues sabotaging your sleep—from mold toxicity to hormone imbalances to gut infections. When you address the root causes, not just the symptoms, lasting sleep becomes possible.
