The Only 2 Things You Need to Sleep Better in 2026

By Martha Lewis12/31/2025
The Only 2 Things You Need to Sleep Better in 2026

You've tried all the sleep hygiene tips. You've bought supplements, tracked your sleep, adjusted your routines. And you're still lying awake at night.

Here's the truth: it's not because you're doing something wrong or because your body is broken.

It's because most sleep advice completely misses the only two things standing between you and consistent sleep.

The Gas Pedal vs. The Brake

Think about trying to drive with one foot on the gas and one foot on the brake. That's exactly what's happening when you try all the "right" sleep things while toxins, infections, and imbalances are working against you.

The gas pedal? That's your meditation, your sleep hygiene, your calming supplements, your perfect evening routine.

The brake? That's the hidden stressors keeping your nervous system on high alert:

- Toxins from pesticides, heavy metals, and mold

- Pathogens in your gut creating inflammation

- Blood sugar imbalances

- Hormone dysfunction

- Neurotransmitter deficiencies

You can press harder on the gas all you want—do MORE routines, take MORE supplements—but the car won't move until you take your foot off the brake.

Lever #1: Remove What's Bad

The first step is identifying and removing what's actively blocking your sleep.

In my Complete Sleep Solution program, I run a Total Tox Burden test that looks for:

- Environmental chemicals and pesticides

- Heavy metals

- Mycotoxins from mold exposure

Everyone has toxins in their body—we're exposed to thousands daily through food, water, personal care products, and our environment. But when your toxic load gets too high, your body can't keep up. Those toxins create chaos, affecting how your genes express, how hormones are made, and how neurotransmitters function.

I also run gut testing to identify pathogens. These organisms don't just cause digestive issues—they produce toxins as waste products that burden your liver and disrupt sleep.

Lever #2: Replenish What's Missing

Once we've removed what's bad, we need to restore what your body's running short on.

As we age, deal with chronic stress, and face nutrient-depleted foods, we become deficient in the building blocks our bodies need to function—and sleep—properly.

This is why I test for:

- Hormones

- Neurotransmitters

- Gut health and beneficial bacteria

- Nutrient deficiencies

If you don't have enough good bacteria to make neurotransmitters like GABA and serotonin, sleep will be hard. If your gut can't absorb nutrients properly, your cells can't create the energy and compounds you need to feel good and sleep well.

Why Foundations Come Before Biohacking

I work with a lot of clients interested in longevity who are doing things in the wrong order.

They're taking longevity supplements, intermittent fasting, cold plunging—all before addressing the basics.

But here's what I've learned after working with nearly 300 clients: you can't optimize what isn't functioning yet.

Before you think about biohacks or peptides or advanced longevity protocols, you need to:

- Heal your gut so it can absorb nutrients

- Eat nutrient-dense, high-quality food

- Balance your blood sugar

- Get enough protein for essential amino acids

- Restore basic vitamins and minerals (B vitamins, vitamins A, D, E, K, omega-3s)

Once your body is sleeping well and in balance, THEN you can optimize. But trying to optimize a broken foundation is like building a mansion on quicksand.

The Simple Truth About Sleep

Sleep should be easy. We're meant to sleep an average of eight hours a night without thinking twice about it.

For those of us who struggle, it feels impossibly complicated. But when you break it down, there are really only two things getting in the way:

1. What's actively stressing your system (toxins, infections, imbalances)

2. What your body no longer has enough of (hormones, neurotransmitters, nutrients)

Remove the first. Restore the second. That's when sleep becomes natural again.
