The Missing Piece Keeping an Entrepreneur Awake at Night - Dan's Sleep Breakthrough Session

The Missing Piece Keeping an Entrepreneur Awake at Night - Dan's Sleep Breakthrough Session

Have you tried everything for your sleep—functional medicine tests, gut protocols, supplements, meditation—and you're still waking up at 3 a.m.?

You're not alone. And more importantly, it doesn't mean you can't fix it.

In this episode, I sat down with Dan, an entrepreneur who's been dealing with sleep maintenance insomnia (waking up in the middle of the night) for years. Despite working with multiple practitioners and running tons of tests, something was still missing.

Here's what we uncovered—and what might be missing for you, too.

The Gut-Sleep Connection Is Real (But It's Not the Whole Story)

Dan had been focusing heavily on gut health to improve his sleep, and for good reason. He had:

- Burping after every meal

- Bloating

- Trouble digesting fats

- Loose stools

These are all classic signs that something's off in the gut. And yes, gut health is huge for sleep—it affects everything from neurotransmitter production to hormone balance to inflammation.

But here's the thing: by the time you have gut symptoms, other systems are already affected.

When your gut isn't working well, you're not absorbing nutrients properly. That means minerals get depleted. Hormones get out of balance. Your liver struggles to detox. Your brain can't make enough serotonin, GABA, and dopamine to help you feel calm and sleep well.

So while fixing the gut is important, it's rarely the only thing that needs attention.

What Else Could Be Waking You Up at Night?

If you're waking up between 1-4 a.m., cortisol is often the culprit. Your body is releasing stress hormones in the middle of the night, which raises your body temperature, heart rate, and blood pressure—basically the opposite of what you need to stay asleep.

But why is your body doing that?

The three most common reasons I see:

1. Blood sugar imbalances – If your blood sugar drops too low overnight, your body releases cortisol to bring it back up. This wakes you up.

2. Liver detox issues – Your liver does most of its detox work at night. If it's overwhelmed or sluggish, that can trigger a cortisol response.

3. Gut pathogens – Things like H. pylori, parasites, or bacterial overgrowth create inflammation and stress in the body, which can spike cortisol at night.

Dan had dealt with H. pylori in the past, and honestly, I see it in about 85% of my clients. It's way more common than most people realize—and it can absolutely mess with your sleep, even if your levels seem "low."

The H. Pylori Debate

Some experts say H. pylori is no big deal—half the population has it, we've adapted to it, move on. Others say it causes ulcers and stomach cancer and needs to be eradicated immediately.

I'm somewhere in the middle.

It depends on:

- What other pathogens are present

- Whether you have symptoms (like burping, bloating, acid reflux)

- How well you're digesting protein

If someone has low elastase (the enzyme that digests protein) and H. pylori, that tells me the body has been struggling to digest protein for a while. In that case, I'll usually recommend addressing the H. pylori—even if it's at a "low" level.

Small Things That Make a Big Difference

Sometimes the simplest habits get overlooked. For Dan, one of those was water intake.

He was only drinking about three glasses a day. That's not enough to flush out toxins, support digestion, or keep your body functioning well.

The goal: Drink at least half your body weight in ounces of water per day (so if you weigh 160 lbs, aim for 80 oz).

And quality matters. Tap water can contain heavy metals like uranium (yep, I learned that the hard way). A high-quality water filter—like Pure Effect or APEC—is worth the investment.

Also, if you're drinking reverse osmosis or distilled water, you're removing minerals along with the bad stuff. So you'll want to add them back in with something like Beam Minerals (electrolytes + trace minerals). I've seen this alone help balance mineral levels and clear out heavy metals over time.

Why "Trying Everything" Doesn't Mean You Can't Get Better

Dan's story is one I hear all the time. You've done the tests. You've worked with practitioners. You've tried the protocols. And you're still not sleeping.

That doesn't mean you're broken or that nothing will work.

It usually means something's been missed.

Maybe it's:

- Mineral imbalances

- Neurotransmitter depletion

- Heavy metal buildup

- Blood sugar dysregulation

- Hormone imbalances

The body is connected. When one system is off, it affects the others. That's why I look at the whole picture—gut, hormones, minerals, liver, nervous system—and help the body get back in balance as a whole.

Because that's the fastest (and most effective) way to finally sleep through the night again.

Key Takeaways

✅ Gut health matters for sleep, but it's rarely the only issue

✅ Waking up at night? Check cortisol, blood sugar, liver detox, and gut pathogens

✅ H. pylori is more common than you think—and yes, it can affect your sleep

✅ Drink enough high-quality water (and add back minerals if you're filtering)

✅ If you've "tried everything" and still aren't sleeping, something's been missed—don't give up
