Stop Taking Sleep Supplements Until You Do This

If you're taking sleep supplements and still can't fall asleep, stay asleep, or you're feeling worse than before—this one's for you.
I just reviewed lab results for two clients yesterday, and I had to share what I found. Both were taking well-intentioned sleep supplements recommended by professionals or online sources. Both were smart, proactive people doing everything "right."
And both were making their sleep worse because they were supplementing without testing.
The Problem With Symptom-Based Supplementing
Here's the thing: these clients weren't taking bad supplements. They were taking the wrong supplements for their bodies. The recommendations were based on symptoms and assumptions, not on what was actually happening inside their systems.
Let me walk you through what the testing revealed.
Case #1: When "Calming" Supplements Become Stimulating
My first client was taking common amino acids for sleep—glycine, tyrosine, 5-HTP, tryptophan. He was also doing healthy things like eating enough protein, balancing blood sugar, and strength training.
Sounds good, right?
But when we tested, here's what we found:
Glycine levels were twice as high as they should be. When you have too much of something, it can actually become stimulating instead of calming.
Tyrosine was converting to L-Dopa (over 3x normal levels), but his dopamine was still barely normal. It wasn't converting properly.
Glutamate was through the roof. This neurotransmitter is very stimulating and directly impacts sleep. Why? He was taking multiple protein powders daily, plus a pre-workout drink with even more amino acids. His body couldn't process all of that.
5-HTP was still low—even though he'd been supplementing for years. The overstimulating neurotransmitters were blocking conversion to serotonin.
He was trying to do the right things. But without testing, those supplements were pushing the wrong pathways and blocking recovery.
Case #2: The "Adrenal Fatigue" That Wasn't
My second client, an older woman, was told she had adrenal fatigue. She was prescribed an adrenal glandular to help her body produce more cortisol.
She was exhausted and not sleeping, so this made sense—except it was completely wrong.
Her testing showed cortisol was extremely high—not low. Through the roof, actually.
Her adrenals were working just fine. They were responding appropriately to stress. That supplement was telling her body to make *even more* cortisol, making sleep worse and creating that wired-but-tired feeling.
The real problem? A massive toxic burden. She had more toxins than I've ever seen in any client. Dozens of them.
Her body was producing high cortisol as an appropriate response to all that toxicity and inflammation. The issue wasn't her adrenals—it was her overburdened liver and inability to detoxify properly. Her fatigue came from mitochondria that couldn't make energy properly, not from adrenal problems.
Treating the wrong cause kept her stuck.
The One Rule Before Taking Another Sleep Supplement
The common thread between these two very different cases? They were treated based on symptoms and assumptions, not on what was actually happening in their bodies.
This is the tricky part about sleep issues. They can be caused by so many different factors. The fact that you can't sleep doesn't tell you which system to fix.
Is it neurotransmitters? Adrenals? Toxins? Liver detox? Hormones?
Sleep is just telling you something is overloaded. It's not telling you which system.
That's why you need to test, not guess.
Test results show what's high, what's blocked, what needs to be stopped first, and what your body actually needs added. That way, you're never stimulating a system that might not benefit from more stimulation.
Your Body Isn't Failing You
If you've tried everything and nothing is working, please know this: your body isn't failing you.
Poor sleep is a sign your body is out of balance. It's your body saying, "Help me—something is off."
When we address the true* stressors by finding what needs to be addressed through lab testing, you're able to sleep well again.
The fastest way to sleep better is to test so we know what your body actually needs.
In my Complete Sleep Solution Program, I use four different lab tests plus assessments to look at everything affecting your sleep—from both body and mind perspectives.
