Silent Sleep Robbers: 5 Hidden Imbalances Keeping You Awake

You're cutting out caffeine after 2 PM. You've got your sleep hygiene dialed in. You've tried every supplement on the market. But you're still staring at the ceiling at 3 AM, wondering what the hell is wrong with you.
Here's the thing your doctor isn't telling you: your blood work might look "normal," but there are hidden imbalances in your body that are literally keeping you awake. And until you find and fix them, no amount of melatonin or sleep rules are going to help.
After working with over 300 clients (and fixing my own chronic insomnia), I've identified five underlying health issues that show up again and again. Let me break them down for you.
1. Hormone Imbalances Are Messing With Your Sleep
And no, this isn't just a "women's problem."
Both men and women need balanced levels of estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone to sleep well. When these hormones get out of whack—whether estrogen is too high, progesterone is depleted, or testosterone is through the roof—your sleep takes a hit.
But here's the big one: cortisol.
Most of my clients have sky-high cortisol at night. That's your stress hormone—the one that's supposed to wake you up in the morning, not keep you wired at midnight. When I first tested my own hormones, my cortisol was higher at 3 AM than at any other time of day. No wonder I couldn't sleep.
High nighttime cortisol causes racing thoughts, raises your body temperature, and spikes your heart rate. But here's what most people miss: taking a supplement to lower cortisol is just a band-aid. We need to find out why it's high in the first place.
2. Your Gut Is Sabotaging Your Sleep
Even if you're eating fermented foods, taking probiotics, and drinking bone broth, you might still have an unhealthy gut.
I was a certified nutritionist specializing in gut health, and I still had a parasite keeping me awake.
Most of my clients have some kind of pathogen living in their gut—parasites, H. pylori, candida, or mycotoxins from mold. And here's the kicker: these pathogens are most active in the middle of the night. They're eating, excreting, and releasing toxins right when you're trying to sleep. This creates inflammation, which triggers cortisol release, which wakes you up.
If you're consistently waking up around 3 or 4 AM and struggling to fall back asleep, there's a good chance you have some kind of gut infection.
Beyond killing the pathogen, we also need to repair your gut lining, restore digestive enzymes, lower inflammation, and boost immune function. It's not a quick fix, but it's essential.
3. Your Liver Is Overloaded
"But I don't even drink alcohol!"
Doesn't matter. Your liver still has to process toxins from your gut pathogens, environmental chemicals, and everyday life. When it gets overwhelmed, those toxins start circulating in your body, causing inflammation and—you guessed it—cortisol spikes.
The liver does most of its detox work between 1 and 3 AM. If it can't keep up, you're going to be awake during that window.
Many people also have genetic variations (like MTHFR) that make detoxification even harder. The good news? You can support your liver with specific supplements and lifestyle practices to help it catch up.
4. Your Neurotransmitters Are Depleted
Serotonin, GABA, dopamine—these are the brain chemicals that help you feel calm, relaxed, and able to sleep. And in almost all my clients, they're running on empty.
Even after I fixed my parasite, liver issues, and hormones, I still wasn't sleeping perfectly. It wasn't until I tested my neurotransmitters and discovered they were depleted that everything clicked into place.
The great news about neurotransmitter deficiencies? They can be fixed relatively quickly with the right supplements. Many of my clients see improvement right away.
Some people also have too much of certain stimulating neurotransmitters like glutamate or histamine, which can keep you wired. Testing helps us figure out exactly what's out of balance so we can fix it.
5. You're Dealing With Toxic Overload
Heavy metals like mercury, lead, and arsenic. Pesticides and herbicides. Chemicals from body care products. Mycotoxins from mold.
At least 50% of my clients test positive for heavy metals. All of these toxins create low-grade inflammation 24/7, which keeps your stress response activated and cortisol elevated—even at night.
This is why your body can't relax. It's constantly in defense mode.
The Bottom Line
If you've tried everything and you're still not sleeping, it's not your fault. And it's not in your head.
There are real, measurable imbalances in your body that standard blood work doesn't catch. The good news? Once you identify and fix these issues, your body can finally do what it's designed to do: sleep.
I use functional lab tests to look at gut health, hormones, liver function, neurotransmitters, and toxins—giving us a complete picture of what's keeping you awake. And then we fix it, naturally, without drugs.
