How Kerry Finally Slept Again After Years of Failed Fixes

After years of insomnia, Kerry was going four to five days without any sleep. She was literally shaking from exhaustion. She'd tried everything — sleeping pills, sleep restriction therapy, CBD oil, hypnotherapy, you name it. Nothing worked.
Sound familiar?
Here's how we finally helped Kerry get her sleep back after years of struggling.
When Nothing Works for Your Insomnia
Kerry came to me after trying just about every sleep solution out there. Her list was long:
- Sleeping tablets from her doctor
- Sleep restriction therapy (which made things worse)
- Cognitive behavioral therapy
- Hypnotherapy
- Herbalist treatments
- Standard NHS HRT
- CBD oil
- Breathing and mindfulness apps
She'd spent thousands trying to fix her sleep. But nothing addressed what was actually causing the problem.
The sleep restriction therapy was particularly brutal. If you're not familiar with it, you're told to only stay in bed for a couple hours and get up if you can't fall asleep within 15 minutes. For someone already sleep-deprived, this creates a vicious cycle of anxiety and panic.
Kerry couldn't even look at her bedroom without feeling anxious. She couldn't sleep in the same bed as her husband. Her nervous system was falling apart.
What the Tests Actually Revealed
When we ran functional lab testing, we found multiple underlying issues:
- Depleted neurotransmitters
- Low sex hormones
- Detox pathway issues
- Low melatonin
- Mineral imbalances
- Mold toxicity (mycotoxins)
- H. pylori and bacterial overgrowth in the gut
This is exactly why generic sleep advice doesn't work for chronic insomnia. Kerry didn't need better sleep hygiene or another meditation app. She needed to fix the physical imbalances disrupting her sleep.
The Changes That Actually Helped
We worked on multiple areas at once:
Dietary changes — Getting her gut health back on track was foundational
Targeted supplements — Minerals, vitamins, and specific nutrients for detox and neurotransmitter support
Bioidentical hormone replacement — Working with a doctor who prescribed proper bioidentical HRT (not synthetic hormones)
The timing mattered too. Kerry started bioidentical HRT after we'd improved her gut health. A healthier body tolerates and responds to hormone therapy much better.
She also noticed a huge difference between the standard NHS HRT and bioidentical hormones from a specialized practitioner. The bioidentical approach included higher progesterone and better-absorbed estrogen without the bloating and side effects she'd experienced before.
The Reality of Getting Better
Kerry started seeing improvements within a month or so. But it wasn't a straight line up.
She'd have a couple good weeks, then a rough patch, then three good weeks, then a setback. That's normal. Life happens — work stress, family issues — but the overall trend kept moving upward.
Now, several months later, Kerry can:
- Sleep in the same bed as her husband
- Go to bed without anxiety
- Work normally
- Exercise regularly
- Go on holiday
- See friends without worrying about sleep
She's off sleeping pills completely.
What Changed Beyond Sleep
This is what I love most about this work. When you fix the underlying causes, everything improves.
Kerry went from avoiding people and putting off plans because she felt so terrible, to living a normal life again. She's not riddled with anxiety anymore. She's not shaking from exhaustion.
As she put it: "I was in such a hole that I never thought I'd get out of it."
The Hard Parts Were Worth It
Kerry did the work. She made dietary changes. She gave up caffeine and alcohol. She took the supplements consistently. None of that is easy, especially when you're exhausted and desperate for sleep.
But treating the root causes — the hormones, gut health, mold toxicity, mineral deficiencies, and neurotransmitter imbalances — is what finally worked after years of band-aid solutions.

If you're struggling with chronic insomnia like Kerry was, the answer isn't another sleep app or trying harder to relax. It's finding and fixing the underlying physical imbalances keeping you awake.
