How chakras can help you sleep well with Deidre Norman

I recently completed a 7-week class on chakras with Deidre Norman, Master Sattva Yoga teacher and Medical Intuitive, and I learned how chakras affect sleep.
I was so impressed with what I learned that I interviewed Deidre on my podcast!
In this blog post I share details of that interview including what the chakras are, why it’s important for chakras to be in balance for good sleep, how to balance your chakras, and so much more.
This is going to be fun. Let’s dive in!
What are chakras?
Chakras are energy centers or vortexes of energy, and your body is made of 7 main chakras along your spine. They start at the base of your spine and go up to the crown of your head.
All of your chakras are important, but the 7 main chakras are the ones you want to focus on for good sleep and other benefits.
Your chakras hold memories and affect how you feel physically. Each chakra affects different parts of your physical body.
When the chakras are out of balance, they can directly affect your quality of sleep.
How stress and a busy lifestyle can affect the root chakra and your sleep
Your root chakra is located at the base of your spine and is associated with the energy of the earth. So, when this particular chakra is out of balance it can put you into “fight or flight mode.”
A stressful or busy lifestyle can cause your root chakra to be out of balance. When it’s out of balance, your nervous system will have trouble calming down at night to allow you to sleep.
This is why it’s so important to learn how to reduce your stress and balance out your lifestyle.
Easier said than done, right?!
Deidre gives you some tips. Keep reading…
Ways you can reduce your stress to ground your root chakra to get a good night’s rest
Since your root chakra is associated with the energy of the earth, you want to connect to nature to ground your root chakra. This could mean spending 5 minutes outside in nature, stepping into grass, or hugging a tree. (Try it!)
Another way to ground your root chakra is through meditation that focuses on visualizing roots going down from your root chakra into the earth.
One of Deidre’s favorite ways is by repeating affirmations, especially before bed. She recommends you place your hands on your root chakra (located on the base of your spine) and breathe into it. Then, repeat these 3 affirmations to yourself:
- “I’m safe in this moment”
- “I’m safe in my body”
- “I have the right to be here”
My favorite tip from Deidre for relaxing before bed is to press down on your right nostril to close it off and breathe out of your left nostril only for at least 4 minutes.
These tips will help you ground your root chakra and calm your nervous system down to get a good night’s rest.
How to reduce nightmares when you’re sleeping at night
Have you ever wondered where nightmares come from? Deirdra shares the answer with us…
When we come into this world, we enter through the 7th chakra, located at the crown of the head.
When we leave this world, we exit through that same chakra.
If you are experiencing nightmares at night, it’s happening in the 7th chakra. You are having a nightmare because you are energetically leaving your body. This movement of energy signifies “death” to your physical body.
So, if you want to reduce nightmares, or try to get rid of them all together, you need to keep your energy in the 3rd chakra, which signifies safety.
Here’s exactly what you can do before bed:
- Place your hands on your 3rd chakra, located just below your rib cage, and lay down in your bed.
- Breathe in and out.
- Set the intention that you’ll astro-travel (or dream) from your 3rd chakra (instead of your 7th chakra).
The 3rd chakra is your safe place and the center of who you are. It’s the place where you honor yourself. That is where you want to keep your energy when you sleep.
