Find out why you can't sleep with these 4 functional lab tests

Find out why you can't sleep with these 4 functional lab tests

Maybe this is you: You go to your follow up appointment with your doctor, ready to get the results of your bloodwork back so you can finally get an answer as to why you can’t sleep.

But when the doctor comes in, she lets you know that your bloodwork all came back “normal” and suggests that your insomnia is all in your head.

It’s so frustrating because you know that isn’t it. Something is keeping you from sleeping, but no one knows what!

In truth, bloodwork just doesn't give us the full picture of what is really happening with your body. That’s why I instead use 4 specific functional lab tests to better understand what's happening in your body so we can solve your insomnia.

These functional lab tests aren’t actually meant to diagnose anything (unlike bloodwork, which might diagnose a major problem), rather they show how the different systems in your body are working so we can see what’s going on before things have gotten really out of whack. If you aren’t able to sleep, that’s a serious sign that there are imbalances in your body, and these tests can help us figure out just what your specific imbalances are.

My story

I was working to help children sleep when I had my sleep issues. I tried all the things (sleep hygiene, meditation, supplements, etc.) but nothing worked. I stumbled across another practitioner who was using functional lab testing to better understand what was happening in their clients’ bodies and I immediately knew this was the answer to help myself and my clients.

I got certified through Functional Diagnostic Nutrition to be able to read and interpret test results from clients, and learned to better approach their issues holistically, looking at the whole person, including diet, exercise, stress, etc.

Through this training, I got my own testing done and I found out I had a parasite! I had probably had it for 13 years since traveling in India and Nepal (on my Eat, Pray, Love tour ♥️).

But that’s not all.

I had hormone imbalance.

I had gluten sensitivity.

I had copper and uranium toxicity.

I had neurotransmitter deficiencies.

It might sound overwhelming, but I was excited to see all of this! Each of them offered an explanation as to why I couldn’t sleep, and so I was able to fix them. I addressed these things and my sleep got better!

Now I help my clients in the same way I helped myself.

I remember my client David had the same reaction to his test results that I had.  He was so excited to see his test results. All his bloodwork came back normal and yet he wasn’t sleeping, so he was excited to get a fuller picture of what was happening in his body through our testing.

Some clients feel nervous or worried about what the tests will find, but I always feel like it's good news when  we find something (which we always do) because then we can begin to address it.

If you aren’t sleeping there is no way that the test results will come back normal and in balance.

Over the past few years working with more than 200 clients, I have learned what the most valuable functional lab tests are to help us find the root cause(s) of sleep issues.

These tests look at overall health, but I’ve also narrowed them down to the four tests that give me the most information for the lowest cost.

How does testing work?

We can work together and get your lab tests done no matter where you live in the world.

I order the tests and they get shipped to you, you take the samples in the comfort of your home, send them back to the lab in prepaid envelopes, and then I get the results sent to me. It’s amazing that we can do these tests from anywhere.

The 4 Functional Lab Tests I use to find out why you can’t sleep

1. Hormone Zoomer by Vibrant Wellness

This is a urine test that shows how your sex hormones are being broken down by your body. The test requires 5 samples over a 24 hour period so it gives an average of your hormones throughout the day instead of just a second in time. When sex hormones are depleted or out of balance, it can directly cause insomnia.

This test also shows your cortisol pattern over the course of a day. At least half my clients have super high cortisol at bedtime or in the middle of the night which is why they’re awake full of energy with their mind racing.

The hormone zoomer also shows how liver detox is working. When your liver is congested and can't handle all the toxins it's supposed to get rid of, those toxins circulate around causing inflammation, especially at night when the liver is most active. Your body then releases cortisol to deal with the inflammation, which of course wakes you up.

This test also looks at melatonin and B vitamin levels for methylation which also affect sleep and detox so we can see if you're deficient and could benefit from support.

And it has markers for bone health and endocrine disruptors (toxins that affect hormones).

I get so many answers just from this one test!

2. Gut Zoomer by Vibrant Wellness

This is a stool test which looks at over 300 organisms living in your gut.

It detects pathogens (such H. Pylori, parasites, or candida) which are nocturnal and are a common cause of waking up in the middle of the night.

This test also shows the good bacteria in your gut which make up to 90% of neurotransmitters (melatonin, GABA, serotonin, etc.) which are necessary to feel calm, relaxed and able to sleep.

The gut zoomer also shows how well you are digesting food, how strong your immune system in your gut is, how much inflammation is in the gut, and if you have gluten sensitivity. It gives an overall picture of your gut health.

None of my clients have a healthy gut, even if they don't have digestive issues! Gut health is a crucial piece of the puzzle for everyone with sleep issues so you’ll finally be able to sleep through the night by addressing your gut. And it’s way easier than you think!

3. Neurotransmitter test by Vibrant Wellness

The Neurotransmitter test is a urine test specifically looking at 30 neurotransmitters, including serotonin, dopamine and GABA which can directly cause sleep problems when they’re low.

This test also measures glutamate and histamine and the stress hormones norepinephrine and epinephrine, all of which can lead to sleep issues when elevated.

This test has been a game-changer because it enables us to start using supplements to improve your sleep right away.

4. Total Tox Burden
The Total Tox Burden identifies toxins that are causing Inflammation and disrupting your sleep.

It tests for:

- Mycotoxins (from mold)

- Environmental chemicals (such as pesticides and BPA)

- Heavy metals

When you lower stress and inflammation in the body from these toxins, your body won't need to release cortisol at night, and you'll be able to sleep peacefully.

Putting together the puzzle

In conjunction with these valuable lab tests, I'm looking at the whole picture of my clients' health. These tests are just one piece of a complex puzzle.

(If you've worked with other doctors and practitioners and haven't gotten better, you aren't broken! It's just that something has been missed.)

I do assessments of your epigenetics (what genes are being expressed), your symptoms, and your entire health history, so I can get a true picture of what's going on in your body.

Instead of guessing at supplements, I can look at the tests and see what supplements your body actually needs.

I always do all four of these tests, and not just one at a time.

If you have sleep issues, multiple systems in your body are out of balance, and we have to address all of them for you to be able to sleep normally again.

It’s a different combination for everyone; it’s never just one thing.

If your gut isn’t healthy, then your minerals are out of balance and heavy metals are accumulating, so then your hormones are out of balance.

So the fastest most effective way to address everything is to look at all of these tests at once so we can see the big picture. These four tests give me the most clues to specifically address sleep issues.

One client’s story

My client Emily developed insomnia after receiving a vaccine and when we gave her these tests we discovered several imbalances in her body. These were most likely already there, but receiving the vaccine threw her body over the edge.

She had estrogen dominance, liver detox issues, high cortisol at night, a parasite, and dysbiosis (imbalance of good to bad gut bacteria).

Once we started working together, I helped her improve her sleep in just a few nights by pinpointing some quick changes that would help her right away.

She said, “I am constantly referring to others to the immediate success I had working with you and how the lab tests legitimately found the imbalances in my body which were causing my sleep issues so I was able to keep improving.”

This is possible for you too.

If you aren’t sleeping, there IS a reason why and these lab tests will help us discover what that reason is.

Then we can use our mind and body approach to create solutions for you long term.

When you find the root causes of your sleep issues and work on restoring health, it's inevitable that your sleep will improve!
