3 Essentials for Deep & Peaceful Sleep

There are 3 essential things to look at first if you aren’t sleeping well.
We start here with all of our clients, even though we’re doing lab testing in some of our programs, and 100% of them need to address at least 1 of these essentials.
Can you guess what the 3 essentials for deep and peaceful sleep are?
In this blog post, we’re going to talk in detail about smart sleep habits, the best diet for your body, and balancing your blood sugar - all with the lens of getting you better sleep!
Let’s get started.
Why smart sleep habits are important for better sleep
Everything you do during the day determines how you sleep at night, so make sure you aren't sabotaging your sleep with bad habits.
Napping, sugar, alcohol, exercise, and so much more - are all things to look at when creating smart sleep habits.
Some people think napping during the day is a bad sleep habit, but in my professional opinion, a short nap during the day is fine.
Sugar and alcohol you definitely want to reduce for good sleep.
And exercise can be great for your body, mind, and sleep.
In my Sleep Essentials program, we cut through all the noise that you're hearing out there and give you only the information that you need to improve your sleep habits and sleep better.
But it’s true, looking at habits isn’t THE answer to sleep issues. It's not going to help if you have a parasite for example. However, I have found that it helps people get more sleep in the short term while we work on the long term, like getting your body back in balance!
Finding the best diet for your body to get good sleep
Your diet and nutrition is important for sleep. Most people don’t realize how important it is!
There is a difference between eating healthy and eating right for your body.
But you can find the ideal diet for YOUR body so it can easily rest at night.
To optimize your diet you want to:
- Learn your metabolic type
- Keep your blood sugar levels steady
- Balance your macronutrients for your metabolism
- Follow an anti-inflammatory diet
- Avoid foods you’re sensitive to
- Avoid certain special diets
This involves lowering inflammation, identifying food sensitivities, and finding your right balance of protein, fat and carbs. Your diet affects your hormones, energy and sleep.
My client Andrea said, “The major changes were with my diet and lifestyle, and those were hard at first, but I have finally reached a place where I feel really good about my diet and lifestyle. I feel like a brand new woman!”
In my Sleep Essentials program, you’ll learn how to eat well for your specific metabolism so you can optimize your health, digestion and sleep. And we keep it simple!
Balancing your blood sugar is key to a good night’s rest
My client Wes said, “The big thing that really made the difference was the dietary change...I really focused on increasing protein intake and also did some things in terms of the order of food to try to address minimizing glucose spikes. And I think ultimately, surprisingly, my root cause was a blood sugar imbalance!”
So, what’s the connection between blood sugar and sleep?
If your blood sugar levels are on a rollercoaster, up and down, it will affect your sleep. It basically forces your body’s insulin and cortisol levels to work harder to adjust things inside your body.
If your insulin and cortisol are out of whack, that could be what’s causing you to wake up in the middle of the night. It might even cause you to need to eat food, when you should be sleeping.
This is why it’s important for you to learn how to test and balance your blood sugar so you can sleep peacefully.
My client Susan said, “One major thing is getting my blood sugar under control and not having me wake up at 3am every night because I’m hungry.”
In my programs, we use optimal ranges that follow the recommendations of functional medicine, instead of the mediocre ranges that the traditional medical community uses. The optimal ranges we use are different from what's "normal" on bloodwork or even on continuous glucose monitors.
